I'm piggybacking this message to Frederick.

I have a Ugandan student in my class on AFRICAN LITERATURE (enrollment 27) named Subi Namakula.

She told me yesterday that her father is exiled from Uganda after being arrested and tortured because the President did not like what he said on his radio program.  He now lives in Chicago.  She visited him last week and told him she had just studied my novel, "The General is Up", in my class.  Her father told her he knew me.  She gave him the Goa 1556 copy of my novel.  He started reading it and was laughing away while reading it.  She added that his name is Ronald, an unusual name for a Ugandan, which is the name of the narrator of the novel.

Incidentally, non-Ugandans do not understand the Ugandan sense of humor, where one laughs a lot about the most terrible happenings.

Best.

Peter

P.S.  In my novel, Ronald, in trying to stop himself from laughing at the speech of the General to the nation at midnight on Christmas, brings down the TV set, which begins the deconstruction and the end of the General.   This is one of the weaknesses of one of the two other major characters, David D'Souza: he never laughs.
