‘Markets of Goa’ a coffee
table book released.
‘Markets of Goa ‘ – a Coffee
table book by Assavri Kulkarni was released at the hands of Deputy Chief
Minister of Goa Adv. Francis Dsouza in the presence of Art and Culture Minister
Mr Dayanand Mandrekar and Director Art and Culture Mr. Prasad Lolyekar.
‘Markets of Goa’ is the
culmination of 8 plus years of systematic photo documentation by Assavri
Kulkarni, a well-known photographer in commercial and creative photography
circles. It is the first of its kind attempt to bring together photographs of
Goa’s markets, some of which are slowly losing out to the rapidly increasing
mall culture in the state.
The book covers 58 markets
spread over Goa. It includes daily, weekly, Seasonal and Festive markets and
offers a view and understanding of Goa’s cultural and local diversity through
its markets.
The book has a foreword by
noted International Fashion designer Wendell Rodricks and a synopsis by
well-known historian Prof. Prajal Sakhardande.
The book was released at a well-attended
function at the Multi-purpose hall of the Art and Culture Department amidst a
gathering of art and history lovers, media and the general public.
Noted historian and
photographer Mr. Sanjeev Sardessai reviewed the book and expressed admiration
and regard for the array of markets covered as well as for the quality of
documentation.
The other book released on
the occasion was Fortresses and Forts of Goa by Dr. P. P Shirodkar. The
Directorate of Art and Culture, Government of Goa has published both books. Printers
Devil, Porvorim, has executed the design and layout for the book.
‘Markets of Goa’ is available
at the Bookshop of the Art and Culture Department, Sanskruti Bhavan, Patto Panaji Goa.
