No focus since we have chosen to read any book of our choice and discuss that book. We had 6 people attend last time, hopefully there will be more this time.

Warm Regards,

Leonard Fernandes

Leonard, Shout more often and shout louder and you'll get the audience. As Helga pointed out, sometimes you have to post repeatedly before people start being to noticing something of good value! (Of course there are other issues involved here, which is why I sometimes call myself an ethical spammer -- even if that might seem like a contradiction in terms :-))

Now to turn serious for a moment: our experience is that more people turn up if you have an agenda announced, or a fixed speaker. Don't give up, but keep on at it. We at the Goa Book Club in Panjim (can't live up to our Third Thursday name anymore... so difficult to schedule the right speaker) have been down to even three or four participants.

But you never know when you'll strike gold, if you know what I mean (as Augustus would say). I was pleasantly shocked on counting approx 50 participants at one event when George Menezes was speaking. It does take time to build up.

I'll try my best to be there this weekend. Regards, FN

Dear Leonard,
Can I just say that a book club should be less people and not more. I have never understood the emphasis on numbers when it comes to group activity. Some interactions are meant to be intimate and small. A book club should grow in intimacy and a deep, reflective understanding of the written word. It is not a lecture or a movie that needs a box-office hit. It is rather like that other activity which is much better enjoyed when the numbers are low.

Best,
Selma

Fred, you might have consciously or unconsciously misunderstood me but it really annoys me when you keep posting the same message more than once. Sometimes i waste time trying to figure out whether there is something else that you added to the message and most often its nothing. If you want to 'hammer' it please add something like 'repeat post' in the subject headline so I wont waste time.

Dear Leonard,
I totally agree with Selma.
Even though we were only 6 and then 5 members for the last book club meeting, we had a very stimulating discussion which probably would not have been possible with a bigger crowd.
Looking forward to tomorrow's meeting.
Best,
belinda

Would have loved to attend but Chowgule College has a screening of
Portuguese films on every last Saturday of the month.

Hope to attend your next book club meeting. Hope you have a good time

I think we had a lovely session yesterday. Selma and Belinda almost predicted what would happen.

While I tend to rely on the safety of numbers, yesterday I saw how wrong I was.

Special thanks to those who came to support the initiative. You know who you are.

Leonard Fernandes
