June 30 (Reuters) - A strong 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck southernMexico early on Wednesday, shaking buildings as far away as Mexico City and sending people into the streets in their pajamas.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered 25 miles (41 km) northeast of Pinotepa Nacional in Oaxaca state. The temblor awoke residents in Mexico City nearly 300 miles (470 km) to the north, but civil protection officials in the city had no initial reports of casualties.

"I felt it like I almost always do. People came running out of the building," said Pedro Salazar, 42, a security guard at a four-story historic apartment building in Mexico City.

Search helicopters whirred over the capital and police sirens were heard, but power and phone connections were working in the city center.

"We don't have reports of damaged buildings or people hurt," a civil protection official told Reuters. (Reporting by Cyntia Barrera and Patrick Rucker; Writing by Catherine Bremer; Editing by Doina Chiacu)
