I have learned more about my body. I have always wondered how the actual combination of diet, exercise, rest and stress will affect the blood sugar of a Type II diabetic. There seems to be little data or research regarding this issue. I believe that the general consensus is that a diabetic tends to be sedentary and must be encouraged, no, forced to accept the diabetic way as directed by those that know what is best for them. They put you on an 1800 calorie a day diet that is composed of mostly highly refined foods. It tends to be high in carbs, low protein and almost no fat. It pays no attention to the glycemic index/glycemic load and provides no consideration for a high energy life style.
Over the years I have learned how to forge a reasonable diet for a Type II diabetic with a high energy lifestyle. My diet consists of roughly 50% carbs, 30% protein & 20% fat. I also have traditionally eaten 5 meals a day. 3 of those being more of a heavy snack (300 calories + containing fruits, cheeses & nuts). However there would be times when my sugar would go low (without warning) and I would have to take drastic measures to quickly raise it. This is always hard on the body and isn't a pleasant experience. So I have always attempted to prevent the incidents.
During this game I have fought low sugar (especially at night). There have been at least 6 episodes. I have jacked with my diet continuously through the game. I have had to raise my carb and fat intake to offset my calorie burn rate that I currently have. This allows me to level out the insulin demand of my body. I have to carefully balance my glycemic load (carbs) and fat intake. The 8 hour period of sleep is also a factor (fasting). I have also had issues during the day. I have to be aware of my body sugar demands versus food type.
This exercise has made me aware of what I am doing or about to do (activity) versus food type and amounts. I have also had to plan my bedtime snack much more carefully to have a more even sugar load in my blood.
This phenomenon absolutely prevents me from doing a crash diet to lose weight. If I am not careful the diet in this game will allow that.
I would do Game On again to further the journey. I am convinced that no matter what I do, I will not be able to lose 1% of my body weight per week. That would place me on the edge of low sugar constantly and would be a serious problem, especially at night. For me 1/2% would be more realistic.
Game On!
Stay thirsty my friend.
