Hi,

Are there any CD-ROM makers out there who are pressing up-to-date versions
of the GNU archives, including the GNU 0.0 binary distribution? I understand
that Walnut Creek (http://www.cdrom.com) has a GNU CD-ROM, but it dates
back to last February and doesn't include the Hurd. I've also heard that
the FSF won't press the Hurd onto CD-ROM, either.

Thanks.

Somebody on the hurd-help list mentioned that they are planning to include
gnu 0.0 on a CD-ROM. Unfortunately, gnu does not currently support the
ISO 9660 format, so you would have no access to the CD-ROM from the running
system.
Since the release of GNU 0.1 is imminent, I guess some distributors will
wait for this first set of bug fixes.

Regards,
Martin

Please use "GNU Hurd" or "Hurd" instead of "GNU" to distinguish the operating
system from the organization. This will prevent some confusion and
misinterpretations.

Eh? The filename is "gnu-0.0.tar.gz", which means the software is
named "GNU". FSF is the organization. _The_ Hurd is a kernel, not an
operating system. HTH. HIBT?

When I asked my question, I meant the entire GNU 0.0 distribution for
i386 systems (that is, ftp://prep.ai.mit.edu/pub/gnu/gnu-0.0/*).

Sorry about the confusion.

Albert Hopkins is incorrect.

`GNU' is the name of the operating system. `GNU Hurd' is the name for
part of the kernel (with Mach being the other part) and a variety of
utilities, forming one important part of that operating system. The
GNU system has been in construction for many years, and the GNU Hurd
is only the latest piece.

The people who are producing GNU are the GNU Project.

The FSF is an organization which exists to further the GNU Project, by
raising money to pay programmers to work on GNU. But most
contributors to the GNU Project have never worked for the FSF.

HURD is the kernel (or the mach servers), GNU the OS and FSF the organisation.
So GNU is ok.
