Hi Everyone,

According to https://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/users-guide/using_gnuhurd.html#Networking
I should be able to use ifconfig to determine my ip.

Attempting to run 'ifconfig' and 'sudo /sbin/ifconfig' result in
'command not found'.

Note that this doesn't seem to have been updated since *2002*
so take the information from there with care.

Also, distributions often have their own way of doing various things, so
better follow their own documentation, for instance
https://www.debian.org/ports/hurd/hurd-install
for Debian GNU/Hurd.

Meaning: the information about ifconfig is there for Debian GNU/Hurd
systems.

Thanks.

That page is absolute bullshit. Who the hell names ifcofig something
else (except Debian HURD). Would the genius who made that decision
like to step forward and claim their Darwin award?

Stop wasting user's time and your time. I think HURD's standard ISO
should include https://www.debian.org/ports/hurd/hurd-install, and
create a soft link from inetutils-ifconfig to ifconfig.

Calling names is not welcome.

*Nobody* did.

I won't spend the time telling you the story behind it, since you don't
even seem to possibly consider that it is not actually a decision, but a
pending TODO.

Stop wasting maintainers' time by calling them names, and actually help
with what you'd like to see done.

Did you read the README file that was *next* to the ISO image? Which ISO
image did you actually download? Don't expect maintainers to magically
fix issues by just handwaving about them.

I once sent one of these critical/mean emails to this email list before too (sorry Samuel that my ire was once directed toward you. I was being a complete little sh*t at the time).

Jeffrey probably is just really interested in the project, and he probably let his enthusiasm carry him a bit away. Jeffrey building/maintaining/developing an operating system is one of the *hardest* software challenges. Most of the Hurd developers do it for fun and are not paid for their work. If you find something that is not working, then great! Please send a software patch our way!

You will probably get more help, if you speak gently and kindly.

Thanks,

Joshua

Oh, I did that:

,---
inetutils (2:1.4.2+20040207-1) unstable; urgency=low
[…]
* Fix the ifconfig mess: (Closes: #219280, #219904, #222348)
- debian/rules: Renamed the ifconfig binary to not collide with net-tool's
ifconfig. [guillem]
- debian/control (inetutils-tools): Temporarily disable net-tools Provides,
untill we have a working ifconfig/route. [rmh]
Change the package description to note that it is an experimental
package. [guillem]

I'll kindly decline any undeserved award though, thanks.

This is also not Hurd specific, and is described clearly in the
package description.

Once the inetutils upstream code can provide all the required
functionality, I'll be happy to revisit this decision, but certainly
not before.

Guillem
