This technology will virtualize your Wireless network adapter much in the same way VMWare/VirtualBox virtualizes your entire operating system. Once it has been virtualized, you can convert one physical wireless adapter into two virtual ones. This lets you to then connect one virtual wireless adapter to your regular wireless network and use the other virtual adapter to connect to another network such as an WiFi hotspot and let others to connect to your Windows machine wirelessly like they would connect to a normal AP.

Virtual WiFi helps a user connect to multiple IEEE 802.11 networkswith one WiFi card. It works by exposing multiple virtual adapters, one for each wireless network to which connectivity is desired.Virtual WiFi uses a network hopping scheme to switch the wireless cardacross the desired wireless networks. Switching between networks istransparent to the applications, such that the user feels she isconnected to multiple wireless networks simultaneously. Virtual WiFiis implemented as an NDIS intermediate driver, and a user-levelservice in Windows XP. Virtual WiFi interacts with the card devicedriver at the lower end, and network protocols at the upper end. Thebuffering protocol is implemented in the kernel and the switchinglogic is implemented as a user-level service.

I have three different Realtek chipset based wifi adaptors. At some point (Fall Creators?), they all stopped working reliably and it drove me nearly mad. They would either stop connecting altogether, or connect for a minute and then disconnect, or connect at reduced speeds, with lag and jitter. I finally found that getting into Windows Device Manager, showing hidden devices, and disabling the 'Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter' completely solves these problems for me. There are some sites I found by through google searches that suggest this step, but not that many. I'm just wondering how many other folks have this issue? Is this issue limited to Realtek based adapters? How many that have this issue are able to solve it with the same steps? Lastly, is there any drawback to this solution (as long as I don't care about screencasting?)

I had the same issue but the next time I disabled the one Virtual Adapter that kept coming back (the active culprit) and disabled it only at first then ran the registry command then restarted and checked with the netsh command. Afterwards I went back into Device Manager and then uninstalled the disabled virtual adapter then had device manager check for changes to see if it would come back and it showed back with a yellow triangle then soon disappeared for good on its own a few secs later.

The problem is Microsoft wifi direct virtual adapter is interfering with our wifi. Users loose internet connection and are unable to get it back until we uninstall the microsoft wifi direct virtual adapter and reboot. The user is fine until the adapter reinstalls itself. How can I permanently remove this adapter? This is causing great problems with our teachers doing there jobs.

Those connections are actually pretty typical and aren't a sign of infection. It is an issue that frequently occurs where whenever you reconnect to your internet connection Windows will create an additional virtual network adapter. They are created for ad-hoc networking which is a fancy way of saying that in modern Windows versions Microsoft added the ability for sharing your internet connection and using your computer as an access point (basically like a router) for other computers and devices and that's what those virtual adapters are for. It's possible to delete them however they will typically return.

Hi, need help with my adapter, apparantly it is not compatible with wifi direct Windows 10 IoT Core, that means it does not activate the 'Microsoft WiFi Direct Virtual Adapter' in the device manager. Mobile hotspot does not work, Im trying to make a mini pc into a virtual router. Can anybody help with this?

If this virtual adapter is causing issues with your external Wi-Fi adapter, you can fix it simply by disabling the Project to this PC feature. This will allow you to use the adapter without many issues.

What is a Microsoft Wi-Fi direct virtual adapter? With the help of that, your computer can play as a wireless hotspot, connecting to another wireless device over the wireless network and allowing it to access the Internet.

Then you can transfer large amounts of data, and connect and mirror compatible devices to your PC. It is quite useful in some ways, however, you may run into unexpected situations with your external Wi-Fi adapters. If you want to disable the Microsoft Wi-Fi direct virtual adapter, please do so as per the following guide.

Hey All

I'm on Optus Speed Pack 6 and was getting near 500Mbs 24/7 until Windows 11 had a major update recently and was down below 70Mbs and choppy. I then remembered, after days of troubleshooting intermittent slow internet a couple of years ago, I had disabled Microsoft Wi-fi Direct virtual adapter.

Hi,I am having troubles with screen sharing via Miracast. From what I learned, Miracast is direct connection between two devices via wifi. I was thinking I could capture the handshake between my laptop and the TV via Wireshark. I tried to capture all the traffic going via wifi interface but it did not capture anything...Is there any option how to caputre Miracast traffic?

To capture the handshake you need to identify the name of the virtual screen sharing adapter first.Open the network connection overview in Windows and start screen sharing. The virtual screen sharing adapter will immediatly appear in in the overview (device name is something with "Microsoft Virtual WiFi..."). Now stop screen sharing (adapter will disappear) and start the Wireshark capture on the adapter with the name you've just identified. When you start screen sharing again and connect to a Miracast device, you will see the handshake and every following packets in your capture.

Hi JasMan,Notifications about this thread ended in spam, so it took a while before I noticed the replies.Thank you for having look at it. You are right about the dynamic virtual adapter. On my laptop (W10) in "Network Connections" dialog it appears as Local area connection *2 with description like "Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter #2". I also have it visible in Wireshark all the time and in Network Connections dialog only when active. I can also confirm that bluetooth was not needed - I have even disabled it prior connection. At the end I was able to capture the traffic - connect, disconnect initialized from laptop.

This workaround should work in most cases with older devices that are not fully compatible with the Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter. The only caveat is that disabling the virtual adapter will also disable the mobile hotspot feature built-in Windows 10.

Is there any way I can stack up my NDIS filter driver on top of iphttpsinterface, which is a virtual tunnel adapter provided by Microsoft for Direct Access.

With this, I would like network traffic from my NDIS driver to go as input to iphttpsinterface rather than getting the output of iphttpsinterface as input to my filter driver.

Thanks in advance.

A crossover cable is a type of ethernet cable used to establish a direct connection between two devices of the same type, such as two computers or two switches, without the need for an intermediary device like a router. It differs from a regular ethernet cable, also known as a straight-through cable, in the arrangement of its internal wiring. While regular ethernet cables have a specific wiring pattern telecommunications industry association and electronic industries alliance (TIA/EIA-568-B), crossover cables have their transmit and receive pairs crossed over. This allows the devices connected by the crossover cable to communicate directly without the need for a dedicated uplink port or a crossover adapter.
