GNU Emacs on Cray's XMP/YMP

on an XMP or YMP? We are having a heated discussion here at the lab
because our computer administrators are afraid that vi or emacs will
degrade the performance of these supercomputers. The say that vi issues
an interrupt for every keystroke and that will degrade performance.
My questions are as follows:
1. Does emacs create interrupts for each keypress?
2. Is anyone running VI or Emacs on an XMP/YMP? How is
performance?
At the moment nobody seems to have any performance data when they speak
for or against editors on supercomputers. Thanks for any help.
