I guess they have maintenance issues just as we do.
But what amazes me is the number of problems of this kind that get
reported on the Gnus newsgroup. In comparison, the problems we face
with VM, like some filling problem here or jumping cursor there, seem
quite mundane!
I seriously considered switching to Gnus two years ago when IMAP use
became critical to me but VM's support for IMAP seemed only half-done.
But I never got the confidence that Gnus was dependable. Email is
too important a part of my work life to be left to the mercy of
overenthusiastic wizards. So, I stayed on and extended VM to do IMAP
fully. It took me only one Christmas break to do the basic IMAP
handling. I have been using it ever since and never lost a message.
(Well, that is a bit of a lie. I neglected to handle UIDVALIDITY
properly in my original code and, so, roughly a year later when the
UID's got recycled after 64000 messages, my VM got confused between
the two versions of the UID's. Deleting the old cache and re-creating
it solved the problem quickly.)
But, on the whole, I think we should be glad that we are blessed with
some very solid code base in VM, and I am glad to be doing my bit to
keep it going.
Merry Christmas, every one!
Cheers,
Uday
You have only to read the Gnus manual to realize that it's not going
to be dependable!
I'd like to thank you for continuing VM development. As you say,
working E-Mail is important these days, and while VM has no bells and
whistles, it just works.

I personally am most grateful for your efforts! It was great to have
the vm development and maintenance effort reinvigorated by Robert, and
it's just absolutely fantastic that you got this back on track now
that Robert is busy. Many thanks from a very happy user!
