Start-up problem; cosmetic change

Having just installed VM 6.72 under Xemacs 21.1, I have two issues.
First: I'd like to change the bars between the different panes
(INBOX, INBOX-summary, etc.) so they're visually distinctive.
The old "black-on-grey" will do fine as a start. Is this documented
anywhere?
Second: when I start VM, instead of a proper summary I get no
summary and the "INBOX" frame shows the complete messages file with
_all_ the headers and other cruft. I also get "Wrong argument type:
stringp, nil" in the echo area.
