I'm using VM on GNU Emacs 23 (emacs 23.1 and emacs-vm-8.0.12 on
Fedora) and I'm suffering from several bugs, most notably from inbox
getting corrupted frequently because of some sort of mishandling of
character encoding. Launchpad shows that no new code has been added in
trunk in more than a year, no bugs have been addressed in that time
either, and the last changes in the stable branch were at least seven
months ago.

I've been using VM almost daily since 2000 and I have trouble writing
with anything other than Emacs. Just trying to configure GNUS makes me
dislike it with some intensity, but I guess I'm going to have to move
over, since VM is simply too buggy.

There are some very old bugs (i.e. not Rob's fault) that cause that in
modern environments (i.e. where you've set utf-8 as your default
encoding). I've fixed a few - I'll try to put together a patch and see
if it applies against 8.0.12 (which I don't use).
(Do you use virtual folders, by the way?)

Uday Reddy is trying to persuade a couple of people to join the
maintenance team, so things still happen when Rob's out of touch.

Now that sounds good news!

Thanks for your reply. Yes I do use virtual folders and I posted a bug
about them not showing up in the menu on X. The menu entries are
there, but the text is invisible. They work correctly on Emacs 22.

This is a problem in emacs 23 and hits org-mode and others as well.
It has been fixed upstream (it is fixed in debian unstable).
Workaround:
$ GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1 emacs &

Cheers,
Erich

Ok. Does 'upstream' mean the code repositories on Launchpad? There's
no comments to bug #343552.

Hello everybody,

VM project will be dead only if we let it die. I hope we won't. Robert
Fenk had taken on a challenging task when he took over the maintenance
of VM from Kyle Jones a few years ago. He went full steam for a while,
but I gather that his other commitments caught up with him eventually.
I still hope that he will be able to return to VM maintenance, but we
can't say when.

The README file shows contributions made to VM by a number of people. I
hope that some of them will return and help with VM maintenance so that
we can keep it up to date. I am myself happy to contribute, and I will
take responsibility for the IMAP support. But the more people get
involved, the better we will be able to maintain it.

Please feel to drop me a line if you are able to participate. (Remember
to edit my SPAM-proof address before hitting the send button!)

Cheers,
Uday

That does not work on Fedora 12 with

emacs-23.1-10.fc12.i686
emacs-vm-8.0.12-5.fc12.i686
gtk2-2.18.3-19.fc12.i686

The menu entries are still invisible.

I agree fully - I love vm and would hate to see it die...
