Dear All,

Having happily used the latex mode with emacs 19.30.1 on one
machine, I copied my .emacs to another where I myself have
installed emacs 19.34.3. However, with the newer version, I
don't get "Latex" but only "Tex" on the menu bar and the key
bindings are different. This isn't my idea of progress!

What has happend to tex-mode.el or wherever it is that this
stuff resides?

Thanks for any tips,

Loris

Do you activate latex-mode or tex-mode for your *.tex files?
It can be done within the files (first lines) or by default (if you're
only using latex and never plain tex) for all *.tex files.

Keybindings: They have changed. However it's not too hard with the new
bindings (in my AUC TeX distribution (9.5a) is also a compatibily file
for the old bindings, but it's not recommended to use them).
Beware: If you're also loading outline-minor-mode, you will run in
problems with the keybindings....

Salut,
- Jakob

I have a related question concerning Emacs 19.34.2.

The LaTeX mode has a nice feature which allows to insert
a \begin{stuff} \end{stuff} pair into the text by typing
C-c C-o. In the new version the interface to this
command has changed in a way which makes this command
more painful to use:

1. The command quotes first for environment options. This is
annoying because in practice almost all environments don't
have options. Moreover, the options are put BEFORE rather
than after the environment name, which is contrary to
the syntax of most (or all?) LaTeX environments.

2. It often happens that one has to insert several environments
with the same name (especially when typing math: equation!).
I used to be able to use repeat-complex-command (C-x M-ESC)
to repeat the last insertion with minimal typing effort. This
does not work any more.

Any ideas as to why this was changed? Is there any way to
change back to the old behaviour?

Part of your experiences sound like being good for a bug report which
you should try to do (environment options inserted before environment
name).

Apart from this, for serious LaTeX editing I strongly recommend
getting and installing the newest AucTeX, for example from
CTAN:/tex-archive/support/auctex (I believe). It offers considerably
more functionality, ease of use and better source formatting than the
modes delivered with stock Emacs.
