checking/checkout to file

Is it possible to do check-in checkout on the active buffer without
living the buffer ( i.e without going to *vcs*)

checking out the the most updated version on "need merge" status
( the version that other user checked in).?
what do you do when you need merge ? Do you use emacs also ?
