C-h m to see shell-mode's help, which explicitly mentions how to
forcibly send the EOF character through to the shell or program
that the shell is running.
(I don't seem to need to do anything special to get C-d to be
recognized by the shell or programs run by the shell. Your mileage
clearly varies in this case.)
