Microsoft today expanded its Windows Server family of operating systems with the addition of Windows Server 2008 Foundation. The new product, which is built on Windows Server 2008 but is 64-bit only, is aimed at small businesses with 15 or fewer users. Windows Server 2008 Foundation will provide small business customers the ability to run business applications and databases, host websites, and provide basic server functionality such as file and print sharing and remote access. I had a chance to talk to Russ Madlener and Julius Sinkevicius, Directors of Product Management for Windows Server, to gain a better insight of why Microsoft is launching the product.
According to Madlener and Sinkevicious, customers have been asking Microsoft for a simple and cheap server operating system for quite some time. Server 2008 Foundation is an entry-level offering that will be available only through OEM partners like HP, Dell, IBM, and Acer. That means that software is preinstalled and small businesses can start using file and print services off the bat. On the other hand, it also means that the price will be set by the OEM and small businesses will not be able to put the OS on their current server (according to Microsoft, about 30 percent of small businesses have a server). Shipments are expected to start in one to two months.

If an application runs on Windows Server 2008 Standard, it will work on Foundation, but virtualization is not supported. In addition to virtualization, other members of the Windows Server family provide additional functionality such as integrated e-mail and simplified management. Another limitation is an 8GB of RAM cutoff, though I was assured that this was plenty for small business server needs. A huge motivation for Microsoft is to get small businesses started with Windows Server early, so that it is easier for them to upgrade to advanced versions as their business grows, as opposed to moving to a competitor.
Today we are launching a new server-based solution with the right technologies at the right price to give small businesses access to the power of server-based business software. Small businesses around the world have big business dreams and needs. To support their success I am also pleased to announce that we will donate a portion of the revenues of Windows Server 2008 Foundation to TechSoup.org and Telecentre.org, two organizations that focus on bringing the power of technology to nonprofits around the world. We see this as an opportunity not only to deliver a technical foundation for business growth but also to create a financial foundation for community.
When I asked why Microsoft did not simply wait till Windows Server 2008 R2 to release Foundation, hinting that it might be the current economic climate that is pushing this release, I was quickly shot down. Microsoft has been apparently thinking about an entry-level server for quite some time, and it has run pilots in countries for a little while. The launch is not a response to the recession; ideally Microsoft would have released this product six months ago.
Extended support for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008 ended in January 2020. Extended Security Updates (ESU) are available, with one option to migrate your on-premises servers to Azure, where you can continue to run them on virtual machines. Windows Server 2008 includes a variation of installation called Server Core. Server Core is a significantly scaled-back installation where no Windows Explorer shell is installed. It also lacks Internet Explorer, and many other non-essential features. All configuration and maintenance is done entirely through command-line interface windows, or by connecting to the machine remotely using Microsoft Management Console (MMC). Notepad and some Control Panel applets, such as Regional Settings, are available.
In Windows Server 2008, the way clusters are qualified changed significantly with the introduction of the cluster validation wizard.[19] The cluster validation wizard is a feature that is integrated into failover clustering in Windows Server 2008. With the cluster validation wizard, an administrator can run a set of focused tests on a collection of servers that are intended to use as nodes in a cluster. This cluster validation process tests the underlying hardware and software directly, and individually, to obtain an accurate assessment of how well failover clustering can be supported on a given configuration.
Hyper-V is hypervisor-based virtualization software, forming a core part of Microsoft's virtualization strategy. It virtualizes servers on an operating system's kernel layer. It can be thought of as partitioning a single physical server into multiple small computational partitions. Hyper-V includes the ability to act as a Xen virtualization hypervisor host allowing Xen-enabled guest operating systems to run virtualized.[23] A beta version of Hyper-V shipped with certain x86-64 editions of Windows Server 2008, prior to Microsoft's release of the final version of Hyper-V on 26 June 2008 as a free download. Also, a standalone variant of Hyper-V exists; this variant supports only x86-64 architecture.[24] While the IA-32 editions of Windows Server 2008 cannot run or install Hyper-V, they can run the MMC snap-in for managing Hyper-V.
Server Manager is a new roles-based management tool for Windows Server 2008.[25] It is a combination of Manage Your Server and Security Configuration Wizard from Windows Server 2003. Server Manager is an improvement of the Configure my server dialog that launches by default on Windows Server 2003 machines. However, rather than serve only as a starting point to configuring new roles, Server Manager gathers together all of the operations users would want to conduct on the server, such as, getting a remote deployment method set up, adding more server roles etc., and provides a consolidated, portal-like view about the status of each role.[26]
Most editions of Windows Server 2008 are available in x86-64 and IA-32 variants. These editions come in two DVDs: One for installing the IA-32 variant and the other for x64. Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems supports IA-64 processors. The IA-64 variant is optimized for high-workload scenarios like database servers and Line of Business (LOB) applications. As such, it is not optimized for use as a file server or media server. Windows Server 2008 is the last 32-bit Windows server operating system.[33]Editions of Windows Server 2008 include:[34]
A second release of Windows Server 2008 based on Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, was released to manufacturing on July 22, 2009[60] and became generally available on October 22, 2009.[61] New features added in Windows Server 2008 R2 include new virtualization features, new Active Directory features, Internet Information Services 7.5 and support for up to 256 logical processors. It is the first server operating system by Microsoft to exclusively support 64-bit processors, while consumer-oriented versions of Windows maintained 32-bit support until Windows 11 in 2021.

i have dell perc 6i ,once install unbeakable linux on the server the server R900 can not detect the disk then go out of the installation ,please i want the steps or method for complete my installation

I came morning at server room and i heard alert sound peeeb peeb, i look to the server (DELL PowerEdge 6800) there is orange led at one of HDD and the other flashed, and the server is working and its on windows.
hi, i have dell r410 with perc h700. My server was shipped with a singal hdd. i added 3 more hdds on the hotswappable trays.
The Hard drives are shown in Raid config, but are written unuaseable.
Please advice how to set up the raid?
Could i be missing a step?

if I replace 3rd effective drives and decide to reconfigure logical drives, 0 and 1. LD0 is raid 1, consist of 2 hdd. LD1 has 3 hdd, and 1 hdd is hot spare. After completed your mentioned steps, how do I make those logical drives recognized by bios . My case was when I began install windows 2008, it failed to see drives. So I could not install the os. Why?
