I am using pre-built emacs binaries provided by machten that have been
configured to work without xwindows (which is what I want). From the
directory of these bins I typed: tar cf - . | (cd /;tar xvf -)

which installed emacs to usr/local.

Emacs will not run no matter what variation of the name I type in the
command line (gnumacs, emacs, gnuemacs...). I get "command not found."
Is there some other configuration deal I should be aware of?

thanks,
jennifer

Try emacs-xx.xx (i.e. emacs-19.29...) to be sure, type:
ls /usr/local/emacs* and see what pops up
