exit VI in emacs

I entered VI in a shell in emacsl. ZZ doesn't get me out. How do I exit VI in emacs?

fyi, :q is a standard vi command
.....

right - I was typing :q and it was showing on the screen right by some text, didn't realize I could just press enter and it would work.  I was trying some things on google searches, but didn't help….
