Proportional Spaced Fonts

I'm currently doing quite a lot of document writing in Emacs on a
laptop whose screen is only 800x600 and I'm getting frustrated by
the small amount of text that you can see inside an Emacs
window when using a fixed spaced font, even at the smallest
legible size.

I've experimented using a proportionally spaced Helvetica font in
Xemacs and you can get MUCH more text in a window and still have
things completely legible, but obviously none of the paragraph
filling functions work properly. This makes it almost impossible
to use for my purposes.

Does anybody know if there are plans to fully support
proportionally spaced fonts? (preferably in Emacs19)
