I have a student lab of sun computers. Many students using
the lab will have experience with text file editing using
the windows "notepad" program. If students are forced to
use some other editor, that will detract from the actual work
at hand, which is programming matlab. Solaris comes with a
program called textedit that is fairly simular to notepad,
but close to notepad means students will still have to learn
how to use the editor.
What I'm hoping is someone out there has a notepad mode for
emacs. I would get some level of satisfaction by using emacs
for their editing, as the instructors by and large feel emacs
is too complicated for students to learn.
