number?

Note that there are gnus-article-sort-* and gnus-thread-sort-*.

And since article number is approx the same as arrival date whereas
the date header is sending date, the two are pretty close anyway. I
go for the speed.

Well, neither one of the two following does the trick (it still sorts
by number, even it says that it sorts by date)
(setq gnus-article-sort-functions '(gnus-article-sort-by-date))
(setq gnus-article-sort-functions 'gnus-article-sort-by-date)
and when I use
(setq gnus-thread-sort-functions 'gnus-article-sort-by-date)
I get the following error:

It still provides the same bug; even with parens. Also
gnus-article-sort-* does not work; even with parens.

Try this:
(setq gnus-thread-sort-functions '(gnus-thread-sort-by-date))
(setq gnus-article-sort-functions '(gnus-article-sort-by-date))
Then enter a group with threading on. And enter a group with
threading off. Does one of them work?
If you get a sorted display with threading off but the error with
threading on, please submit a bug report using M-x gnus-bug RET.
Include the backtrace.

For seeing the date in the summary buffer, see the variable
gnus-summary-line-format.
For reverse sorting, you can just create a new function:
(defun mimo-reverse-number-sort (h1 h2)
(gnus-thread-sort-by-number h2 h1))
And then you use this function in gnus-thread-sort-functions instead
of gnus-thread-sort-by-number. Doing the same thing for sorting by
date works in a similar way.
