There is a way to set a timeout when gnus is trying to get mails and
news?

Sometimes I need to kill emacs...

Is the default key ‘C-g’ i.e. ‘Control+g’ not working?

Probably a bit late to the game but: Sometimes, sending USR1 to
the emacs process helps as well:
(info "(elisp) Error Debugging")
