gnus-unseen-mark not shown after compaction/regenerate

Hello,
after doing a compaction (z) and regenerate (g) in the Server
Buffer (nnml backend): newly arrived messages do not have the
"unseen" process mark anymore. I.e. instead of
. [ 23: Author ] Subject
I am only seeing:
[ 23: Author ] Subject
The new article numbers are in the range from 1 - 2500. The
entry for that group shows something like that:
("group" ..
...
(seen
(1 . 13370)
(13372 . 14541)
(14543 . 14548)
...))
Is this the reason for not seeing the unseen mark?
How can I reset or update this?
System: FreeBSD, Emacs 26.3
