I have an insurmountable problem installing Emacs 19-31 on a i586, SCO
3.2.4.2 machine.

When I start Emacs, it displays the usual start-up screen, loads cc-mode,
and then dies, giving Fatal error(11). ../emacs Segmentation violation --
Core dumped.

I used dbxtra to produce a stack trace. Here it is:

I read the note in PROBLEMS about badly installed GCC, so downloaded gcc 2.7.2
from Sun Site at Imperial College (London, U.K.). I reinstalled it, using:
configure --prefix=/usr4/gnu
make LANGUAGES=c MALLOC=gmalloc.o

(I had copied gmalloc.o from the Emacs directory). I followed all the steps
in the recommended gcc installation process (make the compiler, compile itself
twice and compare these) and everything was OK. I noticed, however, that the
gcc configure hadn't spotted the i586 and said I had an i386.

I still have the problem. (The stack trace above is actually from after
the reinstallation of gcc, but I believe it to be similar to how it was before
reinstallation: the lines immeidately after the where command are anyway.)

Help!

I have a full log of the installation of both gcc and emacs, if that will
help (they're quite long, so I haven't included them here).

Also, my terminal type is ansi-43, based on 25-line ansi. (ansi-43 is an
in-house customisation for 43-line displays). How do I go about letting Emacs
use this terminal type?

Thanks a lot,

Bob

Bug-Report

GNU-Emacs Version 19.31.1 (mips-sgi-irix5.2, X-toolkit)
Indy, Operating system: IRIX 6.2

Description:

I am using Emacs from an X-Terminal (Reflection X) under Windows95.
Emacs doesn't start up and doesn't issue any error message but instead
remains in an endless loop if the font is set to the following in the
.Xresources file:

emacs*Font: -*-courier-medium-r-*--20-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

although the specified font is available in this X-Server.
It starts correctly if the above line is changed into the following

emacs*Font: -*-courier-*-r-*--20-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Surprisingly the correct font is used in this case.
