Would anyone know if I had a system using mks/RCS .. could I use GNU RCS
for continuing to maintain revisions or would have to start over and
lose my history? I am very new to RCS so hopefully I have expressed
what I am looking for. Basically.. I need to move source from a NCR box
using mks/RCS to a Sun box which only has RCS compiled on it.

Thanks!

MKS/rcs and gnu/rcs are 100% file compatible.
MKSSI has a single 3 line set difference from the rcs file format. Using sed these lines can be removed and the files still work fine with rcs, mks/rcs, mkssi, cvs, .....

I've once written a script to convert MKSSI archives to CVs.
It should work in your case too.

It's on ftp://ftp.aladdin.de/pub/people/chris/tmp/mks2cvs.pl.gz

I have successfully used Gnu RCS on RCS files created by MKS RCS. Two
points: You may have to rename the RCS files to be compatible with Gnu,
and Gnu won't work if the RCS file contains binary data. You should be
fine if the contents of the RCS file is ASCII text.

I understand this is a very old conversation... But I wonder if anyone can share this script, or fill in what the "single 3 line difference" is that I should look out for?

I have a large repository of MKS archives which I am hoping to resurrect.

In case anyone stumbles across this latter, I found out the answer.
The MKS SI (RCS) format has an extra "format text;" in the header and an extra text which comes before "desc" and "log" entries and has the format "ext @ Some special format text @"
