Gospel of Thomas Saying # 9

9 Jesus said,
Look, the sower went out, took a handful (of seeds), and scattered
(them).
Some fell on the road, and the birds came and gathered them.
Others fell on rock, and they didn't take root in the soil and didn't
produce
heads of grain.
Others fell on thorns, and they choked the seeds and worms ate them.
And others fell on good soil, and it produced a good crop:
it yielded sixty per measure and one hundred twenty per measure.
..................................................

(9) Jesus said,
"Now the sower went out, took a handful (of seeds), and scattered
them.
Some fell on the road; the birds came and gathered them up.
Others fell on the rock, did not take root in the soil, and did not
produce
ears.
And others fell on thorns; they choked the seed(s) and worms ate them.
And others fell on the good soil and it produced good fruit:
it bore sixty per measure and a hundred and twenty per measure."
..................................................

9.)
Jesus said:
A sower came forth,
Filled his hands, and cast.
A few seeds fell upon the road, where
Birds came down and devoured them.
Others fell among thorns,
Where they choked, or were eaten by worms.
Still others fell upon good ground,
Where they could bring forth good fruit.
...................................................

9. Y'shua says:
Behold, the sower came forth--he filled his hand, he threw.
Some indeed fell upon the road--the birds came, they gathered them.
Others fell on the bedrock--and they did not take root down into the
soil,
and did not sprout grain skyward. And others fell among the thorns--
they choked the seed, and the worm ate them.
And others fell upon the good earth--
and it produced good fruit up toward the sky, it bore 60-fold and 120-
fold.
(multiple asyndeta; Mt 13:18-23, =Mk 4:3-9)
................................................

(09) Jesus says:
(1) "Look, a sower went out. He filled his hands (with seeds),
(and) he scattered (them).
(2) Some fell on the path, and the birds came and pecked them up.
(3) Others fell on the rock, and did not take root in the soil,
and they did not put forth ears.
(4) And others fell among the thorns, they choked the seeds,
and worms ate them.
(5) And others fell on good soil, and it produced good fruit.
It yielded sixty per measure and one hundred twenty per measure."

Can there be any doubt that this is an
earlier simpler version of what is found in the gospels as THE
PARABLE OF THE SOWER ? Jesus says understanding this parable is so
important that if you don't understand this one you really won't
understand any of the others ! And he explains it..... So the
final question seems to be: Why is it so important to know that
only a few will provbide fertile soil for the seed or word of God to
grow ? Anyone got a thought on this ?

Sure there can be doubt. They could both be independent versions of
an oral tradition.

and the list owner looked out at the posters

some were just here to try to get us on
down the highway, to convert us to being like
them. the moderator bird swooped down and
zapped them off the list.

some were shallow dirt fluffy bunnies who
just never caught on, stuck in a literalist
mindset, and they got bored and left

some came with some thorn in their side,
hating this, wounded by that, with all of
this baggage and that's all they wanted to
talk about. they got moderated until they
left.

others shared and compared notes and
grew with the rest of us, exploring new
experiences and thoughts and checking in
to see if anyone else had experienced the
same. and these are the true Gnostics

 well that says it all.
I once alluded to myself as being a garden, sometimes the seed
falls onto the road and misses me completely.
parts of me are stoney as yet, and need to be tilled, so the seeds
don't take root.
others fall on my fears which choked the seeds, and the worms of my
mind ate them.
But the seeds that fell into my good soil, the heart of me, grow and
grow, and the fruit is sweet and good.
I could do with some weeding.

still awake down here! thinking about the last line of saying 9,
and the numerical reference. a hexagram came to mind, upper and lower
triangles representing the marriage of spirit and matter.
It's interesting to note, 60 seconds in a minute, 60 mins in an hour,
and 120 hours is 5 days. 5 is the number of spirit plus the
elements, air water earth and fire. also of da vinci's man - the head
in relation to the limbs within the circle.the pentagram is the
gnostic blazing star.

Firstly, this reminds me again of GodSpell the musical. All Good Gifts
Around US.beautiful song, but a bit literalist if you ask me.

Secondly, I think this may mean that only the well nutured and tended are
fruitful.

i.e. Only those who whose minds are fertile and in a fertile environment
will be enlightened.

A fertile environement does not have to be comfy comfy. probably it works
best with those who are challenged maybe seek counseling..from being
ostracized.that's imo and ime is what has made my mind fertile thinking
ground - thinking for myself because no one else was doing it for me.

IMO and IME

The message of What Is (message of the Kingdom) is all around us all
the time. It is in songs (see "The Gift of Gabe by Brian Joseph), it
is in music, it is in art and actually there are seeds just about
everwhere.

Some people don't see the message at all. The seeds don't take root.

Some people listen to preachers, priests and gurus who tell them to
ignore the message. The birds (preachers, etc.) eat these seeds.

Some hear the message but let other messeges choke it out.

And some (those who have ears to hear) listen to the message and
learn.

IMO.

Hi Ken. Yes. In the Pureland myth-story the Pureland is said to
be a place where everything and everyone is constantly teaching
enlightenment. Like the Kingdom in the Gospel of Thomas, the
Pureland is all around us when we are capable of seeing it.
