Is it possible to have paused video stay on the frame in question instead of the video portion of the window going black? One of the reasons someone might want to pause video is to check a frame for quality. Video goes black if paused and then another window is selected.

I think this only happens with certain VOs. It does not do this for my
on my machine.

This happens on my system regardless of the video output driver. It doesn't happen in mplayer2-cli.

Can you run gnome-mplayer with the -v option? One guess as to what it could be would be that the window manager is taking the window background color and placing it over the video window. So you might try switching that out.

I tried switching gtk themes from Adwaita to High Contrast. This doesn't happen with HC but does happen with the other three gtk themes I have installed, including Adwaita, which is the default in Gnome 3.

I haven't been able to duplicate this issue on my setup, but I did
make a change to gmtk that MIGHT help.

Tested on

RHEL 6.3 (GTK 2.18.9) Intel video drivers, compiz window manager,
Slider theme

Fedora 17 (GTK 3.4.4) ATI Open Source video drivers, Cinnamon window
manager, Adwaita theme

Brandon,

I upgraded to Fedora 18 (GTK 3.6), and I don't see the problem with
the paused video here either. Oh and I did try mplayer2 with the -vo
gl3 option. With this option I get no picture and I am on mesa 9.0 now.

I'm using mplayer2 691-g661a350, which I built a day or two ago. Your version might be too old. In any event, I can use it with g-m by editing the mplayer/config file and blanking out the video driver field, or by manually entering gl3 using dconf-editor. Works great.

Right now, I have the following issues with g-m:

Video files open pillarboxed, ie. with black bars on the left and right,
* Paused video goes black when switching to another window,
* Volume control without softvol controls something, but I have no idea what anymore, none of the sliders in the audio applet move one way or the other.
* Pausing and unpausing causes the window to resize smaller horizontally, which I thought was fixed by upgrading to Quantal. I went through an uninstall/reinstall of almost everything the other night, and now that issue has returned.

None of these issues happen with mplayer-cli. When using pulse as the audio driver, the volume controls the slider for mplayer2 in the audio applet, the video doesn't resize or go black when pausing, and video doesn't open pictureboxed.

I don't think the video goes black when using compiz/unity, but I can't remember. Most of these issues still happen in the other environment though.

Obviously some of the video issues could be related to the wm, but I wonder if differences in how Debian and Fedora build libav/mplayer might be responsible for some of this too. I know a lot about how Debian builds and deals with libav, and I'm on the Debian-Multimedia team, but I'm not as sure how Fedora deals with it. The same is true for mplayer/mplayer2.

Ok, I don't see all of the issues you are having... but here are some
suggestions..

Under the interface preferences, almost everything should be unchecked
by default except

Respond to media keys and Enable Nautilus plugin

Also in the player tab of the preferences, do you have the same audio
device selected that you have selected in the system volume? If not
then of course the volume won't change. When they match, it works
correctly.

Paused video going black, that appears to be a GTK 3.6 issue (which I
finally see for the first time), It didn't occur for me on GTK 3.4. So
I will need to work around that new feature of GTK (color me happy)

as for mplayer2 I built it on monday... my video card is a radeon
3650HD using the opensource drivers.

I get this..

mplayer/mplayer -vo gl3

I've done some more research on this and it appears the problem may be
with the Adwaita theme, which is unfortunately the default theme. I
installed a few other themes and it does not seem to happen with them.

Yes, this fixes the problem in Adwaita, Ambiance, and Radiance. Could you please change the version in configure.ac from 1.0.7 to 1.0.8a?

Any ideas on the play/pause vertical resize problem?

In dconf is "enable-global-menu" checked under
/apps/gnome-mplayer/preferences ?

I think because you are using the Ubuntu global menu you must have
this set. This is something that I cannot reliably detect at this point.

Or if you have this unchecked, ensure that the environment variable
UBUNTU_MENUPROXY is unset.

I feel like we've had this discussion before, but I can't find the record of it.

No, I unset UBUNTU_MENUPROXY, I removed all appmenu* packages, which means no more global menu at all, and tried cycling that setting on and off, no change. G-m launches with pillarboxes in the first place and then the window gets smaller vertically every time space or p is touched until the window is just the window border and controls with no picture.

BTW, something else. If I have gtk3 and GTK2, does one get enable to the exclusion of another or are both enabled? I tried passing --enable-gtk3 and that appears to exclude GTK2. At least I think it does, the code is not specific enough. I think I'll create a patch for that.

When you have the shrinking window issue, what sub windows are available? Screen shot would be helpful.

As for gtk3 and gtk2, it is one or the other, both cannot be enabled.

That video is supposed to be letterboxed, but the black bars on the left and right shouldn't be there. And they double in size with each of the 3 shots. The first one is how the video opens. It already has the pillarboxing at that point.

Regarding the gtk2/3 issue, the reason I ask is because the configure output when I build with both sets of headers says:

checking for GTK... yes checking for GTK... yes

Only one of them displays if I also pass --enable-gtk3.

Looks like another change in GTK 3.6 is messing up my display code,
this worked perfectly in 3.4 and lower, but in 3.6 something is
reporting a wrong size. So now I have to rework this again. And this
is one area where I have spent weeks of time to get right. So back to
the drawing board.

Yeah, this is code to determine what version of GTK we are using.
There are better ways to do this, but I have not gotten around to
cleaning them all up. There are literally over a hundred places where
I have to work around the changing GTK versions.

I think this problem was introduced in 3.4, because I had this problem the whole length of time during the 12.04 cycle (3.4), and it disappeared for awhile when I upgraded to Quantal in October (which is 3.6).

Found a cut and paste error with the padding in one container, can you
see if that fix corrects it. It fixed a problem with the Media Details

I tested it out. Doesn't fix the issue. I meant to ask about Details and Media info. If I select them, instead of adding real estate below the picture, the screen shrinks until the picture is gone and only that info displays. If I then deselect details/media info, the window doesn't grow back to its original size. Also works this way for the audio meter (which doesn't look like it's refreshing fast enough to be useful). Is that the intended behaviour? I would prefer a new window for those items, or for the window to grow real estate below the picture but not to eliminate the picture, or at the very least, regrow the window to the picture's native resolution.

Sounds like you are a little behind on the SVN code, because r2383
fixed this exact problem of the window shrinking. It was caused by the
padding value of the widgets not being accounted for when the interior
contents of the main window were made visible. Originally, all these
items where in new windows, mailing list discussions led to everything
being included in a single window. The window shrinking was a bug.

Can you start gnome-mplayer with the following command and send me the
output. And duplicate the pausing issue.

G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=GMLIB gnome-mplayer

As for the meter being slow, it can keep up. I have found that when
using pulse audio it does seem to be slow. However, if you switch to
alsa it is faster. I have also found a weird side effect that if you
open a youtube video and have it playing or paused, the display of the
audio meter when using pulse is much faster.

I of course have opened bugs and mailing list posts on this in the
past and no response from the collective owners.

The video immediately resizes itself from 540 to 448, without being /pause/played, and then continues to resize itself downwards by 32 pixels each time I press pause/play.

Yeah, I think that is because gnome-mplayer thinks you have global menus enabled. During the resize you should be seeing something like menubar = 32, or something like that. The menubar size check is skipped if global menus are detected.

Well, you mentioned that you were having trouble designing a foolproof way to detect if they're in use. I have the packages installed, but they're not in use. I will see if I can rattle some cages and find out some better info on globalmenus and I will get back to you.

Brandon,

I put in some debug statements that you can see where the
enable_global_menus is getting set from. Just run

G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=GMLIB gnome-mplayer

And the first two lines if the output should look something like this

(gnome-mplayer:11242): GMLIB-DEBUG: Enable global menu preference
value is false
(gnome-mplayer:11242): GMLIB-DEBUG: Enable global menu preference
value is false after checking for UBUNTU_MENUPROXY

I think that should give you some tips on how this is getting set.

Thanks, but if your method for checking is to look at the UBUNTU_MENUPROXY env, that's not going to be good enough. I have that set even though I am not using globalmenus. I am going to find you a better method of checking to see if globalmenus are in use. Ubuntu users have the appmenu-* packages installed and that env set even if they aren't using it.

Ok, well get me the potential values for that variable and I can read
those and go from there. The problem I had is that I saw some cases
where it was "ON" or "1" or "TRUE" and I just need to know what the
valid options are and then I can put the logic in for processing that.
For awhile just checking for that variable was good enough, it appears
that has changed.

I have confirmed that g-m works perfectly as long as that env is not set. However, I think the env gets reset in the background, even if it were reasonable to ask a user to unset it. I unset it a few minutes ago and now it exists again. Furthermore, even on Gnome-Shell, some Ubuntu apps, like Firefox, don't quite work right unless the appmenu- packages are installed and whatnot. I was going to suggest also checking for compiz vs. mutter, or Gnome-Shell vs. Unity, or some combination of things, but there has to be a simpler way than writing 3k lines of code to check for this.

If you open up a terminal and type

echo $UBUNTU_MENUPROXY

What do you get when global menus are enabled, and when they are disabled.

Might need to logout and back in between tests.

There's no switch. You have to do some of the things in this post to enable/disable it:

Based on this info, I reworked the UBUNTU_MENUPROXY evaluation code.
See if that works for you.

It works! All display issues corrected. All of the appmenu packages are installed and the env is still set.

Hi, I had an IRC chat with Jorge Castro about this. He suggested using XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP, which would output Unity, and enabling the globalmenu in that case. I have pasted the conversation below. If I find out anything further, I will let you know.

<jcastro> bjsnider: there's a variable you can set
<bjsnider> yes, UBUNTU_MENUPROXY
<jcastro> is that not working for you?
<bjsnider> well, it's a long story
<jcastro> how about removing indicator-appmenu?
<bjsnider> let's forget about removing packages or unsetting envs
 i use gnome-shell
all of this stuff is present but not being used
so i was looking for a foolproof way of checking that wihtout removing packages or unsetting envs
 http://code.google.com/p/gnome-mplayer/source/diff?spec=svn2385&old=2384&r=2385&format=unidiff&path=%2Ftrunk%2Fsrc%2Fmain.c
if you look at that single column you can see the code currently being used. right now it seems to work
but is that the best way to check?
<jcastro> oh, so tldr, you want to make sure gnome-mplayer matches the environment the person is in so it does the right thing?
<bjsnider> exactly
<jcastro> one sec
 it's another variable
<bjsnider> see, i haven't tested this code in unity yet, so maybe it doesn't work there
it's supposed to switch on globalmenu support in unity obviously
<jcastro> ah dude!
 it's an xdg variable
 http://askubuntu.com/questions/72549/determine-what-window-manager-or-desktop-is-running
 XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP
<bjsnider> ok, so that is Gnome for me
in unity would it be Ubuntu or Unity?
<jcastro> though, I am pretty sure the menu thing is supposed to export it automatically, I don't think the application is supposed to do extra work
 XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity
<bjsnider> how do you mean?
i'm just going to copy-paste this code for Kevin to look at, so add as much detail as possible
this conversation i mean, not code
<jcastro> sure.
you might want to doublecheck though, maybe post on the desktop list.
<--- neither an expert nor a programmer, but happened to be around when app authors needed help with indicators/menus
<bjsnider> have you seen this kind of issue before with any other apps?
<jcastro> custom apps
<bjsnider> like, do they all have this check somewhere?
<jcastro> like java, eclipse, non-gtk/qt stuff
but for normal gtk/qt apps, it should just work
I am pretty sure we didn't patch every gtk/qt app to export the menu
<bjsnider> yeah, i don't understand that part of it
one problem is that he doesn't like globalmenus at all. i n fact, i am understating that
that's why he refuses to use osx i think he said
so maybe he's just not familiar with it or whatever
<jcastro> does the app use like custom things in the menu?
 something outside normal gtk stuff?
<bjsnider> the menubar is...
<jcastro> that's usually why it wouldn't work
<bjsnider> file/edit/view/help
within those menus there is custom stuff
<jcastro> yeah, that's probably why
<bjsnider> i mean just about every app has edit>preferences but not many have edit>select subtitles language
so maybe the best idea would be if unity ==yes globalmenu is enabled else it is not
<jcastro> yeah
there could be other workarounds other apps are using that might be best practice, but that seems pretty sane
<bjsnider> well, totem ahs custom stuff too. why wouldn't totem need a check like this?
<jcastro> I was just checking totem now
but I don't seem to have a file to check for the sub language
<bjsnider> totem has a sound menu and a go
totem has also switched to the gnome whatever it's called
 application menu?
<jcastro> I think they do buttons now or something
but I'm on raring and I think I'm a version behind
<bjsnider> whatever, anyway some stuff is in the icon on the gnome-shell top bar
wouldn't just about every app have at least one custom item in the menubar?

Brandon,

I don't think that XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP is really a complete answer
either. And you have taken part of my emails out of context.

This has nothing to do with my dislike of Unity or the top menus. What
it has to do with is that the menu bar is moved out of the window
without a reliable way to detect this. The problem that gnome-mplayer
has is that it needs to know all the sizes of the widgets so that the
main window can be properly sized. If I ask GTK for the size of the
menubar, it will tell me correctly, but I have no idea if that menu
bar is within the application window or on the top menu bar.

Most applications do not have this issue because they do not care if
the main content area changes size or not, but when you are viewing
media files people care if they change size.

Well, I didn't mean to misrepresent your views or anything. Nobody can accurately speak on anybody else's behalf. I did a git grep against the totem source and found one reference to appmenu:

totem_app_menu_setup (Totem *totem)
{
GMenuModel *appmenu;

g_action_map_add_action_entries (G_ACTION_MAP (totem), app_entries, G_N_ELEMENTS (app_entries), totem);

appmenu = (GMenuModel *)gtk_builder_get_object (totem->xml, "appmenu");
gtk_application_set_app_menu (GTK_APPLICATION (totem), appmenu);

gtk_window_set_application (GTK_WINDOW (totem->win), GTK_APPLICATION (totem));
}

Lines 169-179 in src/totem-menu.c

I searched for Ubuntu, Unity, globalmenu, MENUPROXY, and appmenu. I just posted a message to the ubuntu-desktop ml and I am hoping someone will respond with a best practice.
