This is a new error for me, have not seen this one before that I recall.
So a couple of basic questions.
What version of gnome-mplayer are you using?
Can you run gnome-mplayer -v and recreate problem and post the output?
Also can you run gnome-mplayer under gdb and then do a backtrace (bt)
when it crashes. I kinda think that the problem is gtk related, but do
you get this same error in other apps like gedit?
I did a quick google of the error and found this bug

And in that case gvfs was needed to make the issue go away.
gnome-mplayer also requires gvfs and so I think you may need to have
that installed as well.
Or you can compile gnome-mplayer without GIO support.
