Hello GNOGA!

Are you a grower in the GNO area interested in flower farming but have questions on how to get your garden prepped for the Fall? Tiny seeds, bulb/tubers/corms, and Spring flowers OH-MY! Well come hangout at Nightshade Flower Farm in Gentilly Terrace to see a production focused, urban flower farm in action. Be ready to get your hands dirty because we will be prepping beds, terminating cover crops, and planting out flowers to overwinter for the Spring!

Flower farming is tricky in the Gulf South and it can be super intimidating to get started. This is a great opportunity to see a real flower farm in action and learn about how to add this high value and extremely beautiful crop to your rotation whie getting to hang with other growers in the community.

This will also be a social hang with drinks, snacks, and good vibes. Feel free to bring something or just bring yourself (and water + gloves!)

If you were able to attend Sprout’s Flower Grower’s Paradise class with Margee and Janette Bell, this work party will be a great opportunity to expand on what you have learned and ask questions.

@Nightshade Flower Farm
Address here: 3016 Rabbits St (there is construction and you’ll need to take a detour either arriving from Peoples Ave via Almonaster, or Franklin via Agriculture St - and heads up the roads are sand but drivable :)….)
2 - 5 pm/dark (or come when you can!)

Hey everyone!

We’re excited to host y’all for our Flower Farm Q&A / Workday coming up this Saturday at Nightshade Farms. It’s gonna be fun :) Here are some details and requests about the event.

Event: Mini farm tour and Q&A followed but a variety of tasks pertinent to flower farming this time of year - planting, staking, netting, adding compost to beds, irrigation, etc! We’ll have some treats and bevs available too :)
Time: 2:00-5:00pm
Location: 3016 Rabbits St, New Orleans. [Construction has changed, you should be able to enter via Abundance St now].
Details: BYO water bottle, gloves if you want them, shears, sunscreen, warm layers, sturdy boots and clothes you can get dirty! There is NO BATHROOM, however we’ve got some good pee spots. While most folks on this list are familiar with farm land, please be sure to watch your step and NOT walk on any plant beds, even if they look like there’s nothing in it, flower babies are so so small.

Got any of these you can bring? We’re looking for
- another wheelbarrow
- loppers
- post-hole driver
- large cardboard for mulching
- shovels
[respond directly to me if you can bring any of these!] TYIA

Excited to share our knowledge, hang, and get our hands dirty, see y’all on Saturday!

Best,
Becca & GNOGA

P.S. I would be remiss not to mention that I’m selling Thanksgiving bouquets & arrangements for pick up Tuesday 4-7pm at Press Street Gardens during River Queen Greens’ Farm Share Pick up. If you need some blooms for your table or are attending a meal and wanna bring the host some local floral goodies. Anyways see you Saturday!

The Greater New Orleans Growers Alliance (GNOGA) includes growers and their allies who are harnessing their collective political and physical power to create an urban food and farm system that sustains grower and eater alike. GNOGA accomplishes this mission through mutual aid, logistical support, shared resources, community engagement, and policy (local and national) campaigns. The community values diversity, collaboration, member input, and clear communication in all our work. We are a chapter of the National Young Farmers Coalition, contributing to and benefiting from the collective power of our peer growers and allies nationwide.
