2010 Summer Camps
The Greater Miami Youth Symphony announces its 4th annual Summer Music Camp. The 2010 GMYS Summer Music Camp promises to be an opportunity for growth and skill development for all students involved. Each student will have opportunities in small and large ensembles, recitals, gala concerts, as well as workshops in improvisation, sight-reading, conducting, and music theory and music history. Students in intermediate camp will also participate in physical education and arts-based literacy classes.
The dates for the camp are as follows:
June 14-July 2: Advanced Camp (3 weeks) at Florida International University School of Music
June 14-July 23:Intermediate Camp (6 weeks) at South Miami High School
July 26-August 13: Beginners Camps (3 weeks) at Deering Estate at Cutler and Haitian Baptist Evangelical Church in Homestead.
Advanced Camp Schedule:
8-9am: Optional Private Lessons
9-9:15am: Warm-Ups
9:15-11:15am: Orchestra/Band
11:15-12pm: Lunch
12-2pm: Instrumental Class/Chamber Ensembles
2-3pm: Electives
Intermediate Camp Schedule:
8-9:15am: Warm-ups, Practice Help, Optional Private Lessons
9:15-11:15am: Orchestra/Band (on Fridays, 1 hour of social-skills development)
11:15-11:45am: Lunch
11:45-12:45pm: Arts Based Literacy
12:45-1:45pm: Physical Education
1:45-2:45pm: Instrumental Class
2:45-3pm: Snack
3-4pm: Chamber Music/Music Electives
A Special Education Division will also be available at the Intermediate Camp for 3rd- 8th grade students with mild varying exceptionalities. Students with mild autism, mild Aspberger's Syndrome, Emotionally Handicapped, learning disabilities, Educable Mental Handicaps, or other mild exceptionalities are welcome to be considered for the GMYS Music Camp.
Beginner Camp Schedule:
The Beginner Camp will take place from 9am-3pm, and will provide a wide variety of activities for students that will increase their instrumental skills (strings and/or wind instruments), music theory, music history, and music reading knowledge, as well as group performance skills. Students will also be given the opportunities to experiment with other classical and world instruments and will participate in fun music appreciation activities such as chorus, recorders, and hand percussion.
The Intermediate and Advanced sessions are open to strings, wind, brass, and percussion students. In order to qualify for the Advanced Session and Intermediate Session, teacher recommendation is required.
The Staff will include the GMYS Artistic Staff, Luiz-Gomez Imbert, Chauncey Patterson, Carol and David Cole, members of the Bergonzi String Quartet, as well as faculty and staff from local universities and colleges, private and public schools, local private teachers, and renowned guest artists/musicians. Private lessons are also available during the camp, and will be arranged at the beginning of the camp session.
