I have been reporting Nigerian phone scammers and 419 fraudulent
lottery spams used through g-mail for months now and never once has
gmail closed one of the scammers gmail accounts. I add the reply from
the scammer along with the full headers and even links to the message
boards the phone scammers have spammed their fake item list to and
nothing. I always get the same auto message back saying they'll look
into it. Every other free e-mail service like yahoo and hotmail or
others have the offending accounts closed down within 2 days but gmail
does NOTHING. I've reported dozens of these people and not once have
Gmail taken action on the accounts.

I believe GMAIL is just as guilty as the scammers for aiding their
illegal activity. I've also filled out the online Gmail complaint
forms and still nothing. is there some reason Gmail just lets these
West African Scammers operate using their domain with impunity? I'd
love to know. What to they do with the Abuse reports? Ignore them

I usually report through

ab...@gmail.com
ab...@gmail.com
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/request.py?contact_type=abuse_spoofing

Am I missing something? Is there a secret gmail address to report
these scammers to that they don't want anyone to know? You'd think
with a;l their money they could hire someone to deal with these
reports and close the offending accounts. All of the other e-mail
servers do so. Even the lesser known ones.

A) How do you know they don't close the accounts?
B) 99% of the time spammers just put any old "from" address they want,
so it's entirely possible that the account doesn't exist at all.

Also:

C) Google is powerless to shut down someone's account unless it was a Gmail
account. The fact that you received it via Gmail is irrelevant.

Like you, I have reported abuse to Yahoo when inappropriate email was sent
from a yahoo.com email address and it looked like it really came from a
Yahoo account. Sometimes this worked. Sometimes not. It probably did not
when the "From" address was forged and it actually came from somewhere else.

I get dozens of emails about fake watches and imported medicine every week
that come "from" my own Gmail account. Of course I didn't send them to
myself. If I report these to Gmail, should they shut down my own account?
I hope not.

A) How do you know they don't close the accounts?

A. You can easily tell if their accounts are shut down by sending
them a message. if it bounces back and you get a failure to send
message. Then that means the account is closed. With all of the other
e-mail domains you get the same type of auto response but then after
about 2 days after they have investigated the issue the offending
account is shut down.

B) 99% of the time spammers just put any old "from" address they
want,

Answer: I'm talking about the actual accounts the scammer/spammers
create using a gmail address. In their spams or 410 letters they leave
a gmail address that your supposed to reply to so they can start the
scam on you. With all other e-mail servers once they have replied to
you using their free mail address. You send the abuse report with
headers that prove it was sent through their domain along with the
incriminating message. After that most Domain servers actually
investigate the incident and promptly shut down the offendi9ng
account.

My point is that Gmail does nothing about it. I don't think they
investigate any of them. I've sent so much evidence of fraudulent
activity. I've even included fraudulent bank details sent to me or
Western Union requests from the scammers for non-existant lottery
winnings and weeks later the accounts remain open. No bounce backs.
THe scammers continue to scam people using that very same gmail
address. The only way it stops is when the scammers move on to a new
address which they do quite often.

Gmail is completely inept at this. They ought to be held responsible
since they refuse to take action no matter what evidence of wrong
doing they are given. I can't figure out what excuse they could have.
Not once have they closed an offending account. I'm not exaggerating.
There is nothing wrong with my reports either because with every other
e-mail server I send the same format reports to they are closed in a
matter of days.

The accounts I report ARE gmail accounts. I only report the E-mail
addresses themselves along with the headers and message content from
the scammers. I actually bait the scammers and gather as much evidence
as I can to prove their intent to de-fraud and send all of the info
via an abuse report with messages and headers. The evidence i send is
more than enough for any other server's abuse dept's. Gmail does
nothing. There has never once been a case of them taking action
against the account. So your wrong they are not powerless. I would
only expect them to close the account of the scammer that I report
after investigating but no,.They never have. Whay is this?

A) How do you know they don't close the accounts?

IIt's simple. If the account has been suspended any future messages you send to that e-mail bounce back "unable to deliver". With the Gmail scammers they continue to scam and reply as long as they want no matter how many abuse reports sent against that account.

I'm not talking about the forged reply to fake addresses. I'm talking about proven e-mails that belong to active gmail users. I never send an abuse report until I get an actual reply from a scammer that i have messaged directly to that gmail account and am certain that the reply comes from that gmail address that can be seen through the headers of their reply's

For example. The West African scammers that spam the mesage boards
with phony item lists of cheap cell phones, laptop, shoes and such and
always require Western Union payment. They leave a Gmail address as
the contact info. I bait them through that address. i gather the
evidence of intent to defraud and senfd the abuse reports to Gmail or
whatever other domain they are using. I add the headwers, message
content a description of the evidence I've collected and the links to
each forum that they have spammed their fake item lists. Usually with
any other free mail domain. The accounts are shut down in a matter of
days. Gmail does nothing.

How could you possibly defend them? You can't say my reports arn't
detail enough, or I lack evidence to shut down the accounts because
every other domain has taken the appropriate action within aprox 2
days. Why not Gmail? Laziness? or they just don't care?

Google is not powerless to shut down a scammers accounts. Especially after a detailed abuse report is sent with evidence of wrong doing that i always gather from baited reply's to the Gmail address. I bait the scammer into sending me reply's incriminating themselves and include their reply's in the abuse reports. It's always been more than enough for all of the other e-mail domains to shut their accounts down. Why not Gmail. I don't even believe they read them.

Not one account has ever been closed that I've reported to gmail. These scammers are still scamming people after I've checked weeks later.
