Last night the final worship service under the name of Florist Avenue Lutheran Church was held. It was a gathering full of emotions - joy and pain, grief and hope, anger and diligence. It was an important step of a long process for the community that has gathered there and those that have walked beside Florist.

Perhaps it is a moment that causes reflection around what causes a church to close. Maybe it is making folks around the synod look at their own congregations and ask the question of where their own congregations land in the life cycle of institutions. How close to death are they? I pray that it gives all of us a moment to pause and give thanks to God for the saints that saw the death of a church as something not to be feared. Florist Avenue knows that resurrection comes only after death, Easter follows Good Friday.

Yesterday morning at a congregational meeting of All Peoples Church, the members approved a three-year plan and strategy for ministry at 40th and Florist. For the past 10 months leaders from All Peoples have been discussing an expansion of our ministry at 40th and Florist. When Florist Avenue Lutheran Church voted to close, they gifted All Peoples with the building and enough funds to maintain the site for several years.

All Peoples has been working with national and synodical leaders, local foundations and mission partners, Florist members and our internal leadership to develop this plan. We are excited to witness God’s power in multiplying the impact of gospel work led by All Peoples. We welcome your prayers of support and encouragement as this vision becomes a reality.

The site remains the home of a Bread of Healing clinic and the Mt. Meru Coffee Project.

All Peoples Church: Havenwoods Campus will remain the home to SEEDS: A NEW WORSHIP, embracing elements of spoken word and hip hop. We gather Sunday evenings for an open mic at 5 and worship at 5:30.

Additional opportunities will be added as the community grows.

Peace,
Pastor Steve
