I use Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and have installed the gmote server,
but when I try to run it I get a message that there is an error. It
says, "Couldn't get lock for C:\Users\AWS/Application Data/Gmote/
gmote.log". I get the same message even when I install it on a
different drive.

Can you try closing the gmote server, deleting the C:\Users\AWS/Application Data/Gmote/ directory and then start up the gmote server?

If that doesn't work, please try to run the gmote server in administrative mode to see if the issue is related to permissions.

Thanks!
Marc

This Application Data folder is an enigma. I just accepted it in the error message but I can't find it anywhere, it's certainly not in C:\Users\AWS and it's not a hidden folder as I have set them to be shown, so I'm unable to delete as you suggest. I have, however uninstalled and reinstalled Gmote Server and no problems occur until it runs and then it gets nowhere other than the error message I first quoted.

As to running in administrative mode I am not sure what this is and when I search for it the only thing that appears relevant is Safe Mode, so I tried this and the same thing happens.

I've looked at permissions and given everyone full control as far as that is allowed but all to no avail.

Regards

Alan

The error could be down to the directory not existing. There's no check in the
code to ensure that making the Application Data or Gmote directories works,
so it could be failing. I'm not sure why it would be though. As a test, maybe
try creating them and see if it works then?

Is this preventing Gmote from working?

I've already tried creating the Application Data directory but when I
tried to rename New Folder as Application Data it told me one already
existed in C:\users\AWS (but I couldn't see it), and it asked if I
wanted to merge my new folder with the existing. I tried refusing but
it just left the New Folder unchanged. Then I tried again and accepted
the merge proposal but all that happened was that my folder
disappeared. There must be a hidden Application Data folder which I
can't find and that isn't revealed by setting 'Show hidden files' on.
One thing I did wonder was whether the AppData folder is actually the
same thing so I investigated that. It contains three folders 'Local',
'LocalLow' and 'Roaming' each of which has a whole raft of stuff. I
painstakingly expanded every subfolder in each of these but there's
not a whiff of Gmote anywhere.

A GmoteServer folder does exist in C:\Program Files (x86) but that of
course is where it was installed and is not what it is looking for
when it tries to run and that generates the error message.

regards

Alan

To find the directory, please do the following:

1. Open up a windows explorer bar by going to 'start', 'programs', 'accessories', 'windows explorer'.
2. In the address bar, paste the following line and hit enter:
%USERPROFILE%\application data\gmote

This is what I got:

Windows can't find 'C:\Users\AWS\application data\gmote'. Check the spelling and try again.

Marc, thanks for all the efforts you have put into this and it's most annoying not to be able to solve the problem, but all I'm  really interested in is having remote control of slideshows without being stuck at the pc, and in the meantime I have found 2 other apps that actually work both on my own pc and on the one at the church where the slideshows are shown, so I'm afraid that for me gmote will go the way the other three or four went that wouldn't even install properly.

Thanks again

Regards

Alan

I found the solution myself. I've just modified the settings file c:\Program Files\GmoteServer\bin\org\gmote\server\settings\SystemPaths.class . I have replace "Application Data" string with win 7 path "AppData\Roaming" and it works!!! Download from attachment new settings file and save it to the c:\Program Files\GmoteServer\bin\org\gmote\server\settings folder with replacement option.
Cheers!!!
