For the People - Maryland Teleconference
Monday, July 12, 7:30 pm

Two ways to join the conference

Meeting Agenda: We are at the crossroads. We will review the national situation and brainstorm about our best way forward in Maryland.

"Good Trouble" Vigil in Honor of John Lewis on July 17

We are fighting "so that the freedom to vote is protected, billionaires don’t control our political systems, and our representatives actually respond to we the people." Recent polling shows that the For the People Act has super-majority support among voters, including many Republicans. Last week, I participated in phone bank to conservative-leaning voters, and we got 83 of them patched through to Sen. Manchin's office to say they support the For the People Act!

There is a vigil for democracy in Rockville at 8:00 pm on Sunday, July 17. Sign up here. There may also be a vigil in Baltimore so look for another announcement soon.

Grassroots Action Is the Key

In the next 6 weeks, We the People have the capacity to enact legislation more sweeping than the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The grim alternative is a decade of gerrymandered Congressional districts, more corruption of elected officials by dark money, and more erosion of voting rights. Here are the action steps you can take now.

  • Sign up with Indivisible to call voters in targeted states.
  • Sign up to call voters in West Virginia and try to convince one friend to do so also. For each session there have been about 50 volunteers making calls, and we get around 100 patch-through calls to Sen. Manchin's office.
  • Sign up with Fair Fight (led by Stacey Abrams) for training to text voters in key states.

3 Bills to Strengthen Voting Rights and Fight Big Money

  • The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R. 4) would establish new non-discrimination criteria for all the states and restore a section of the 1965 Voting Rights Act that allows special measures to prevent states from enacting discriminatory laws or practices. The Supreme Court struck that section in 2013 saying that "blatantly discriminatory evasions of federal decrees [based on race] are rare."
  • The For the People Act (H.R.1/S. 1) is an omnibus bill that would end dark money, provide a source of funds to counteract the malignant influence of big money in our federal elections, create national standards to protect voting rights, abolish gerrymandering in federal elections, and improve ethics in Washington.
  • DC Statehood (H.R. 51) would bring the U.S. into line with every other nation that has a federal capital district.
