Fight Fascism and Corruption

Congress needs a kick in the butt. Here’s how to do your part.

We should all be contacting our representative and our two senators often. Our Maryland Republican representative Andy Harris fancies himself as being to the right of President Trump. And our Maryland Democratic Members of Congress – with a couple of exceptions – should be fighting harder to protect our rights, our health and well-being, and our economic security. If Trump wins, he escalates; if he loses, he escalates. We must escalate the pressure we apply to our Members of Congress.

How do I contact my senators and representative?

Step 1: Your two senators are Angela Alsobrooks and Chris Van Hollen

Step 2: Click here to find your congressional district

Step 3: Click the names of your 3 Members of Congress to send a written message or call them as often as once every weekday.

Special thanks to Chris Van Hollen

Our U.S. Senator from Maryland has been in the news. He went to El Salvador to aggressively defend the Constitutional right to due process under law. But he has also been the number one member of Congress defending the rights of Palestinians in the West Bank. He is willing to take a risk to lift up the dignity of human beings no matter how marginalized and no matter which party is in power. Chris Van Hollen led the U.S. Senate in his attempts in 2024 to pressure the Biden administration to acknowledge that Israel was violating U.S. law by how it was using U.S.-delivered weaponry and by blocking humanitarian aid.

PLEASE EXPRESS THANKS TO SENATOR VAN HOLLEN WHEN YOU CALL HIS OFFICE FOR ANY REASON

What do I say when I call?

Always give your name and your town or zip code so they’ll know you’re a constituent. For the Democrats, if you are aware of a reason to thank any particular Member, start with that. Also, Democrats need to hear that they must fight to defend the Constitution, oppose corruption, and restore the authority of Congress over appropriations and spending.

Then give one particular policy message. Here are some suggestions:

Save Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and SNAP

  • Restore SSA staff; Hands Off my data!

  • Raise SS benefits

  • No cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, or SNAP

  • Medicare age to 55 OR Medicare for all

Stop unconstitutional impoundment of funds and termination of programs

  • National Institutes of Health

  • Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

  • Environmental and climate protection

  • Many more

Tax the rich

  • Reject Trump’s tax cuts for billionaires

  • Restore IRS staff and audit the rich

  • Improve phone service for the taxpayers

Stop Corruption

  • No more contracts for Musk and other big campaign contributors

  • No more personal or corporate data to Musk that he can monetize

  • No more financial market manipulation by Trump and his minions

End tariff insanity

  • Pass legislation to restrict the President’s power to set tariffs to true emergencies.

No war with Iran

No more weapons to Israel. Stop the genocide.

Restore your Congressional authority! Fight!

What’s the trouble with crypto?

Cryptocurrency companies and related individuals spent $245 million to elect Donald Trump and Republican candidates. Trump and his wife have several different cryptocurrency rip-off schemes underway for personal profit. Middle-class Trump followers will end up losing. Although crypto trading is supposed to be confidential (just some campaign spending is “dark”), there are ways that wealthy influence-seekers can signal to Trump what they want in exchange for supporting his crypto “enterprises.” This is why Trump has embraced crypto after calling it a scam during his first term as President.

Cryptocurrency is established by private individuals or corporations rather than by governments. It is, in essence, an inherently valueless arrangement of 1s and 0s in computers.

To pay back his crypto supporters, Trump wants to use your tax dollars to set up a “cryptocurrency reserve.” Governments typically hold reserves of commodities such as grain, petroleum, uranium, and medical supplies to protect against shortages that may be caused by natural disaster, economic dislocation, or war. By definition, there cannot be a shortage of cryptocurrency. Trump is seeking to spend valuable dollars to buy something with no value. This scheme is the ultimate corruption of government. Here are some talking points about cryptocurrency.

  • It’s fiat money without any democratic or sovereign control

  • It is used to avoid taxes, to launder illicit money, and to transact illicit business

  • Some versions are bad for the environment because of the massive electricity used in “minting” coins

  • It’s subject to various types of fraud when it’s traded for dollars or other sovereign currencies

  • The amount of crypto is not controlled to provide for a level of money supply that facilitates general prosperity.
