Shall we update to Groovy 1.6.3 as Grails 1.1.1 is using this version?

Yes I think we should if we can. We've upgraded recently our app to
grails 1.1.1 and therefore groovy 1.6.3 and we seems to experience
some very strange problem around enum and some class not found which
we are investigating. So we should be cautious about it...
