I'm in the process of rebuilding the carburetor, I ordered a rebuild kit from summit racing and they sent me Hygrade Carburetor repair kit 1580 Kit
V17024, but i believe it's not the correct one, so i called them back to verify and a different sales rep told me they didn't even have my carburetor
number in their system Rochester quadrajet 17053309, (403 Engine Federal Standard Non-ca)

is this the correct carburetor ?
or did the previous owner change it ?

I do have a Carburetor on a 1974 455 engine, but unable to locate it's number yet to see if it can be used instead.

Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car, understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car. Hp is how fast you hit the
wall, and torque is how far you take the wall with you when you hit it.

David,

Here you go:

http://gmcmotorhome.info/engine.html#carb

BTW you can save yourself a lot of aggravation and frustration by book
marking Gene's website and checking it before you order stuff for your GMC.

There are very few parts people around anymore that even know what a GMC
motorhome looks like let alone what parts it uses!

Correct carb for a 1978 with a 403 in California would have been 17058559. Everywhere else was 17058254. Correct carb for the 455 in 1974 would have
been 7043254.

both of mine are stamped in a circle on the rear of the carburetor

the 1978 royal 403 engine 17053309, doesn't match any of the numbers on gene's site for 78
http://s3.photobucket.com/user/DavidLive/media/1978%20GMC%20motorhome/IMG_20170218_170818_zpsnoksofug.jpg.html

the 1974 painted desert 455 engine, this one is hard to read i think it's 7037895 and doesn't match any of the numbers on gene's site for 73/74
http://s3.photobucket.com/user/DavidLive/media/1974%20GMC%20Motorhome/IMG_20170311_162100_zpsiqkozijn.jpg.html

so neither one is the correct carburetor for my 403 engine ...

Thanks David

The carb number should be stamped not cast. I believe it runs vertical.

There is a dirty vertical flat under the round thingie. Clean it off and look for number.

Does the 74 carb gas inlet come in the front as all Olds carbs or from the side as other brand Q-jets? 7029 is a 1969 # but 241 doesn't seem to be
Olds.

yeah, the fuel comes from the front, the previous owner of that engine, well he tinkered, he did convert it to hei ignition from points, he had the
engine rebuilt, he had those roller rocker arms on it, and did other things as well.

according to guide online it's from a 1969 4 barrel Q-jet Federal standard Buick with a Manual transmission ...

That Buick mt carb is rare. Bout as rare as an Olds mt carb. Hang on to it or use it. Olds cranks are not drilled for a pilot bearing for a
straight shift trans unless it came with an oem straight shift.

The carburetor in our 78 403 is 17058559. Sometimes carb numbers change during the year. This GMC was built in January of 78. Our other 78 403 GMC was built in December of 77. I believe there's 122 VIN's between them. I'll check the carb numbers on it tomorrow. Be interesting.

Just checked the other carb on the 78 - 403. Same 17058559 carb. So this is the number for Dec of 77, and Jan of 78. Bob Dunahugh

:x

So today i went to smog with the rebuilt carburetor my brother did and it failed HORRIBLY as a gross polluter, so i tired to lean it out and even with
the mixture screws all the way in, the engine still runs and they had it on the machine measuring it and wasn't changing the amount roughly 3000 hc
(ppm) at idle, it's a BAD carburetor

You are miss lead, lean is not good as there is now less gas to ignite.
I help at least 3-5 people per month pass smog.

something went wrong with the rebuild of the carburetor in order to throw up those numbers, so I acquired another carburetor, and installed it and
took it up there and it has some minor issues with 500+ HC when at low idle under 1100 rpm , but at 1100+ idle it PASSED with flying colors (62 HC),

still need to tweak the fuel mixture and as I had it extra lean(only 1 turn out on the mixture screws), the engine had no power to it at that point,
and I need to replace the automatic choke as the rivets are falling out of it.

P.S. hopefully California will pass sb-1239 for pre-1981 exception.

I feel the state will not roll back.
Once you have things running like it should, you'll find that the smog test
will not be a problem.
