Good Morning to all
We are new to the GMC Motorhome world and would like to take a little of your time to introduce us to the community.
We are Eugene & Veronica Knueppel{Gene&Ronny} we live in Wautoma, Wi. We purchased a 1978 Transmode in April of this year.Something I never thought I
would do. Ronny has been bugging me for years to do something other then our pop-up camper. She is tired of the work of setting it up & down. So I
agreed to start looking for something different. I did not want a travel trailer and I did not want to drive a big box around. I came across a couple
of GMCs in Portage, Wi and stopped to take a look at them. I took some pics. and got a phone number. Showed them to Ronny and she was very interested.
So I called the phone number and no answer. In the mean time I did allot of research on the GMC Motorhome and I was so overwhelmed by the drivetrane
and the suspension that I started looking at more and more sites Including this one. I found GMCMI and others like it. Started looking at what was for
sale and pricing. Once i found out what I was looking at I gave that phone number another try and got a hold of the owner and talked with him and what
the coaches where and how much he wanted for them. Well needless to say I found alot better coaches for alot less money. One morning I was sitting in
Chicago waiting to unload{I'm one of those crazy truck drivers} and this 1978 motorhome had just been listed on GMCMIs web site. It looked really
strange with no windows. So before I knew what I was doing I called the owner again no answer but I left my name & number he called me back a short
time later within 2 hrs. He told me he just didn't have the time to keep going with this. he said it had no interior and was used as a mobile office
along time ago and he bought it from the guys who used it very seldom. So we made plans to go up and see it the next weekend and check it out. It had
been sitting in a warehouse for the last 10 years. He owned for about 4 yrs. after that and only put 1400 miles on it. Odometer read 23894 miles I was
thinking more like 123894 but beaning a mechanic all my life I could tell the miles on the odd. were on the money. so we made a deal and was going to
pick it up in Sept. On another matter with the bank I had mentioned the coach to my banker she was very impressed with the idea and after the other
matter was taking care of we would talk about it. The other matter went away and she agreed to lone me the money to buy the coach. so 3 weeks after I
found it, it was sitting in my driveway. the trip to bring it home was 170 miles. My wife was following me and in contact with each other we did the
speed check and the coach was off buy a few mhp so I,m going to say maby 30000 miles on the coach. It needs a major tune-up. It came with 2 onen 6kw
gens. installed from the factory. the one on the driver side had gas in the oil and not going to mess with it. It will be puled and set aside for now.
the one on the pass. side had been set up to run off of a 6gal. boat tank. I put gas in and WALA it started and ran good. I Tried the roof ACs and
both worked. I have been watching this forum since May and been waiting to Introduce our self's to the community and the time to wright this{hope it's
not to long}
Ok back to the topic at hand my leveling system when it is in auto only the right side goes up and not the left. In hold or travel I can raise or
lower both sides with the switches. I have downloaded all the manuals but don't really give a trouble shoot for this problem. If any body has had this
problem what is the solution? before I start to make upgrades to the coach I want to go completely stock from the factory then make my discussion and
what we are going to do. Well I am going to close for now and quit taking up your time. Thank You and Have A great Day.

Make sure the left side position sensor is in place and is attached to the
bogie. It contains a proximity switch that could be damaged. John Sharpe
is the guru on these system.

Yes the sensor is in place. It looks like it can be taken apart is this
sensor serviceable?

I would predict that you have a sensor problem. The sensors are really not servicable. The circuit board is sealed in epoxy gel. Unplug the wire plug
from the back of the sensor; ground one lead on a test light; probe each connector on the plug with the ignition in the run position and the control
switch in "Travel". On one position the light should light; on another the compressor should run; on another the air bag should deflate, it may be
difficult to notice that the air is bleeding from the bleed valve. If all of these work your sensor is bad. If they don't work the is a wiring
problem.

Sorry can't help with the Electro II, my 75 has diff system.
But, I can welcome you to the Funny Farm, where someone will answer your question or help in some way.
Having rebuilt my interior, I can say that your in for some work (being a Transmode (empty box))), does it have a toilet unit?

No toilet but Ronny has a portapoty that I got her when we owned our own
truck got tired of stopping every 30 mins. With me being a truck driver 90%
of the truckstops have showers or if we are in the coach for an extended
amount of time we will stop at a motel 6 for the nite

The electro level II is by far the simplist system. Each side has an airbag, a level sensor, a dump valve and a compressor. The only thing that ties
both sides together is the "travel auto" switch that allows the compressors to run in auto mode, taking direction from the appropriate level sensor.
Each side is fully separate otherwise. If they each work manually, and only one side works in auto mode, the problem is undoubtedly that side level
sensor or sensor wiring.

I have EL1 and not looking at EL2 schematic, but I would check the center switch on driver left. The foam dust protector sheet in the switch turns to
goo and gets on the contacts. Only a philips to remove panel, unplug connectors and Ohm out the switch. I think the center switch is simple DPDT. If
bad it can be opened carefully with a small screwdriver and disassembled and cleaned. Then use some dielectric grease on the mechanism. You can then
rule this out along with the pump and outside switches. The goo in switches was my EL1 issue.

John is the man on the electro level 11 system.
I just had the exact problem you have. And sought the help from John. My problem was cut wires from/to the sensor. It's very easy to take off the
sensor to test it.
Like John said, the manufacture put a lot of "goo" inside the sensor. It has a tendency to ooze with gravity, especially with heat. And that can coat
the sensor optical eye. Making the sensor inop. Good luck finding something strong enough to clean/dissolve the goo.
The good news is that it is the easiest system of all. The bad news, the most important parts are obsolete. Plan to spend some time searching wrecking
yards for sensors. Or used ones from suppliers will hit you up about $90 for a used one. But can be done.
Bottom line, you have a great coach! Enjoy it!! Scott

I will keep that in mind. At the moment I get home 1 maybe 2 days a week
and am building my own garage from Menards,making sure all auto are running
plus what ever is on the honey do list. For me going back on the road for
the week is less work then being at home. In a few more years I will be
able to get back to the 20 or so projects that I have started in the last
40 years. And now a new one.

Gene, I was able to send my lengthy message about the Transmode, but it will show up in your PM (Private Message) box, and not on the original

Gene and Ronny,

Welcome to the group, family, cult, asylum.

It is to everyone's advantage if you fill in a sigfile like most you see here. It should have your real names, so that when you meet others they will
know who you are (like you have but complete. A short about the coach - "78 Transmode with little inside" will tell us a lot about what you are
dealing with. And a geographic reference because because some will be willing to help but have to know what Wautoma is near (Nothing) to know it you
are in their striking range. This all helpful to everybody, but many get these as an email that does not include the message header.

There is a Duane Simmons write up on the air suspension at http://gmcws.org/Tech/dsimmons/air_suspension/air-suspension-system.html. This might be of
some help. There is a lot more in the maintenance manuals that can be downloaded at Bdub's if you don't have them already.

The Onan you are going to pull (good plan), please oil the bores and put it aside carefully. It is still a valuable item. The carburetor may need
help, but get the kit from JimK, the one I bought by the Walboro number has the wrong needle and seat. Even if you choose to never go anything with
it, some part will help others live on.

Facebook is a powerful tool, but please be cautious of any advice there. There are several that write there that have little experience with these
coaches and I have had to shut down some wrong (even dangerous advice) on occasion. You will quickly learn who here are those that should be
regarded.

Unfortunately, there may not be a rally close by any time soon, but there will be next year. You really need to get to one to look at other coaches
and meet people. The is a wealth of support available here. It is good that you found your way here, but you should have introduced yourselves
sooner. This is an amazing community of helpful and supportive people. The only other I know like this is that of the watermen that are my world.
For this reason, I like to welcome new owners here as a new owner of vessel is welcomed there. So,

May the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that set forth within her.
