Picked up an air wrench at a yard sale. works a little.

I've had pretty good luck buying old high end tools and fixin little things.

Never messed with air tools so i don't know where to start or if it is worth the effort.

I don't need it bad enough to spend real money.

thanks

Chicago Pneumatic used to be about the best air tools you could get.

A factory where I worked had a LARGE CP air compressor that had a 400 VDC open frame motor about 7 feet in diameter, and two cylinders, one about 20" in diameter, and the smaller one about 10" (as I recall - I haven't seen this critter for 25 years). It was originally built in 1917.

Used to be. Now they are Harbor Freight's house brand. 'Nuff said. If you plan to use them hard or keep them for a long time, invest in something good, like Ingersol Rand. The newer ones are made in China but they seem to be good quality.

You're thinking of Central Pneumatic at Harbor Freight.

Yeah, Central Pneumatic is the Chinese junk from HF. Some of their stuff is pretty good, others not so much. Almost any thing with an electric motor is way underpowered and under quality. 1 HP in Engrish is about 1 German Shepard power.

Their air tools take a lot of CFM and produce little work. I've tried (or my friends have), them all.

CHICAGO Pneumatic on the other hand is ALL GOOD STUFF. If you can get it cheap, you can probably double your money on it. A good CP impact wrench will out torque the HF thing by a factor of 2.

WHENEVER I run across a used CP or other quality air tool at a yard sale or whatever, if it's a good price, it comes home whether I need it or not.

THis looks very old, all metal. And i looked up the logo, definitely Chicago Pneumatic.

I found some guidance for repair- open it up, clean and lube. Any other tips?

A couple of months ago, I got a Central Pneumatic 3" cut-off tool FREE from Harbor Fright with a $50 (IIRC) purchase.

I haven't bought a blade for it yet, but suspect that won't be horribly expensive. I figured I might need the CP tool someday, and I did need the other stuff I bought.

You're right, my bad. Chicago Electric is the crappy electric tools they sell. Central Pneumatic is the crappy air tools.

Put some air tool oil in it and run it a bit. That should help it work better. If that doesn't help, take it apart and try cleaning around the vains in it, it might just be gunked up. If it still doesn't run better it might need just the vains replaced. The shipping of them will probably cost more than the vains.

Uh, David, I think you may of confused them with "Central Pneumatic' which is the harbor freight house brand. HF hopes you will make this mistake. Central Pneumatic stuff is made to a (low) prce point by the Heathen Chinese for HF. Chicago Pneumatic still makes and sells production line grade air tools. They are not cheap.

Before you tear it down, oil it up with Marvel Mystery oil, or ATF. Run it just enough to get the oil into it. Repeat daily for a week or so. There is a good chance this will de-gunk it.

Steve, have not heard much from you in the last few months. How is your GMC
coming? Any chance of joining us for the route 66 rolling rally in 2014?

Been working nuts on getting ours ready. Haven't been on the forum as much lately. Decided I needed to work on mine rather than read about others working on their's <grin>. Was hoping to make Branson but not yet. RayE is coming over tomorrow to help me put the front clip back in. (Anyone else in the area is welcome to stop in, but we are starting early.) We're getting real close now. I was getting kinda bummed about how long it this has been taking until I sat down and made out a list of everything I've done. It is over four pages long and not every thing is listed yet.

We WILL be ready for route 66.

Taking my thread back.....

I poured Marvel Mystery Oil in the air inlet, fired it up, nasty rusty junk blew out all over the place and now it screams and makes light work lug nuts.

Thanks you all.
