I see oil leaking from the adapter bolted to the block that the oil filter / oil cooler adapter screw on to.
I think this explains some oil usage!

It seems to be leaking around the bolts.
Anyone want to make bets on whether just tightening the bolts will fix it?

This engine was rebuilt last spring or so

Bob Drewes posted these pics of the adapter gaskets.

There is more than one style. The last set I got didn't have the correct gasket in it. If snugging it up doesn't do it the gasket may be off.

Only leak I had after this last engine install. I guess they forgot to double check it. I stopped the leak by tightening all the bolts. Maybe you should try that before pulling it and replacing gaskets, won't hurt.

That is great Keith. Maybe they did not tighten your's enough either. I tightened the nut and the bolts on mine. Stopped all the leaking. I had about 1000 miles on it then and was on the road.

Keith,

Most composite gaskets have "creep". Creep in this case means that they accept some compression with time and temperature when under load this also allows the fasteners to loose tension. There are VERY few gasket materials that are also oil resistant to the microseal level that do not have some creep. The cure for creep is retorquing. So, if that is what you did, then there is a very good possibility that you have cured the problem and that it will stay cured. (I bet you are glad to hear that.)

Keith, I have been in Cabo San Lucas for the last week with my new bride,
and someone else may have answered this for you, but there are at least two
gaskets available for the oil filter/cooler adapter used by Olds on the 455
and 403 engines. As these same blocks were used in agricultural, marine,
passenger car, and motorhome application, the universal gasket set contains
several different gaskets. It is important to use the metal sandwich gasket
for the motorhome. There is full oil pump pressure being contained by this
gasket, and the paper ones are prone to leak and blowout with a subsequent
loss of oil pressure and engine failure. You must remove the adapter from
the block, and match up the gasket with the adapter that is fitted to your
particular engine. Sooner rather than later. Hope this helps.
