[GMCnet] incompatability

I have a friend who just installed a lithium battery as his house battery,
for no good reason other than long life.

His coach is a 1975 Avion, which normally has two house batteries, each
doing their separate jobs, that can be tied together thru a fuse at the 12
volt fuse panel in the bathroom.

He only has one battery in the back (the now lithium), that is picking up
all the 12 volt jobs.



I walked in and heard the buzz box cycling. I unplugged it and it still
continued to cycle so disconnected the battery.

My position is that the lithium is incompatible with the charging system,
both buzz box and alternator and should be replaced or the system be
upgraded to one that is compatible.

The lithium batteries have VERY different charging requirements, from float voltage, to charging scheme, to actual battery use! At the very least, a lithium designed charge controller needs to be used to allow the existing alternator to recharge that battery, and yes a new buzzbox that is designed for lithium battery use needs to be used.

Lithium batteries DO require a different converter that is designed for them, The buzz box will destroy the Lithium batteries pretty quickly. As to the alternator, Lithium batteries can draw a lot of current when charging and that can damage the alternator. There are current limiting DC-DC converters made to address this issue.

Jerry Work did a nice presentation about this a few years ago. A battery isolation manager (?) will keep the alternator from burning up and the buzz box may be compatible or may not.

I’ll look for the link to that presentation.

Big fan of lithium batteries. Also a big fan of lottery winnings.
Have little experience with either.
