I received an electric choke for my 455 without any instructions.
Would those of you who have installed one or have the instructions on how to do it please send them to me or show me a web site where I can download a copy......Thx,

Not knowing whose choke that you have. .....I would recommend Googleing ELECTRIC CHOKE. This brought me to the Holley website and there is the instructions for installing theirs. With pictures even. Hope this helps.

Just find a keyed source of 12VDC on the fuse panel and tap into it.
Some have run 12VDC off the lug on the back of the alternator.

Rod, It is like the one Steve shows in the photos in this thread. Looks pretty simple from the photos, however I got an email that said it is a problem with hot starts?? Comments??

I have heard the same problem as you note below so bought one like this:
The NAPA 2-1603 is excellent, and I prefer it to any manual choke. It uses
an electronic sensor bolted under an intake bolt to detect engine heat. It
fits over the thermostat can on the carb and actuates the choke spring
directly. It works better than the stock thermostat and MUCH better than the
electric heater. It applies choke when the engine is cold and doesn't apply
it when it is hot, including backing off the high idle cam smoothly.

I tired that number at our local NAPA and it is no longer being produced.

Occasionally, it does have a problem with hot starts so I turn on the
key for a second or two before cranking. Not many options here. I
also set it a bit lean so even if it does close prematurely, flooring
the accelerator pedal provides enough air flow for a quick start.

Does your electric choke have one wire connection to it or two?
On a one wire choke you need only a +12 connection to it. The ground is obtained through it's mounting to the carb. On this type I suggest yopu also remove the choke mounting gasket to facilitate a good ground.
If you have a HEI ignition then +12 volt can be obtained from the +12 volt connection on the HEI distributor. If you have a points type ignition DO NOT get your +12 volts from the distributor.
If you have a 2 wire choke then the second wire connection goes to ground. This type of choke can also have a heat sensor thermistor wired in series with the wire going to ground. You do not have to have the thermistor in the circuit. It you do not have it then it will perform just like the one wire choke.

I live near a NAPA warehouse and some business there, so just for kicks I ran 2-1602 (now CBR21602)and they indicate that it is available (for just 62$us). I also went in with an application of a 1973 Toronado and that came back to a CBR21603 (67$us) and also available. I think it isn't time to panic - yet.

potential candidates. Since I haven't held these parts in my hands, you need
to verify fit at your end. All of the following numbers are supposed to
include the thermister sensor.
These numbers all were obtained through cross-referencing numbers on the
Niehoff, NAPA, & Bluestreak sites. NAPA shows photos of the parts.

I also found the 2-wire thermostats on several of the Specialty carb

Question: The choke thermostat has 2 terminals. From the photos, I see that
the thermister unit has 4 wires. What is the correct wiring hook-up?

I am confused with your posting because every choke with thermistor I have seen has two wire connections on the choke heater and only one wire on the thermistor. The thermistor gets mounted on top of the intake manifold under a bolt to sense the temperature and the one wire from it goes to the choke heater. The second wire from the choke heater goes to +12 volts which is usually the HEI distributor or in the case of a points system a wire on terminal "BX" in the terminal block on the front of coach near the isolator. That terminal is where the ignition resistance wire is also attached.
Anyway, I have never seen a 4 wire thermistor for this purpose. Do you have any more info on it?

I just looked at the 2-1660 and 2-1603 on the NAPA site. I see what you are talking about. I have no idea how to wire that one.
I am assuming it has some sort of a built in relay so you wire it to +12 hot all he time and also to a keyed +12 volts. Having never seen it before I can not be sure I am correct or which wire goes where.
If you are buying one, I would go get a one wire one or eliminate the thermistor all together. I think I bought mine from CarQuest.

I'm pretty good at figuring this stuff out.
I was asking about the wiring for the benefit of everyone as I've noticed
that choke thermostats have been a frequent topic lately. If necessary, I'll
provide additional info when I do my own install.
