[GMCnet] External Strawsine Range Vent Filter

I have a 1975 Palm Beach that has the original Strawsine (part #42D8A) external vent system that exits on the driver's side above the galley. It
looks like it is designed to have a rectangular screen inserted in it to keep out insects, small birds, etc. I know the company closed in 1983, but
before I handcraft a screen is anyone aware of a supplier for them?

Strawsine sold out long ago, back in the early 90's I tracked down the
manufacturer who still had the molds and had them do a production run for
Clasco. Was funny when they came in with a piece of duct tape as the hinge
on the metal flap. I called them back to complain and the engineer said
that was what the design called for-- he didn't make it....

Guess there was a good reason why they stopped making that vent-- was
pretty cheesey. Today instead of one dinkey latch at the middle of the
flap there is 2 plus 2 tiny plastic pins as hinges that seem to want to
break on first touch! One vent Emery used to make a couple of solenoid
door opening models actually was a pretty good vent, we use one similar but
yea-- those vints are all kinda cheapo.

Putting a screen in there is a good idea-- it's a direct in for many
critters and man don't spray water up at the original vent when you wash
the coach! Most original vents are pretty sad looking today, some people
just block off the thing and forget about the stove vent or just let it
vent into the cabinet like a pile of home stove hoods do.

So I guess to answer your question no-- there is no actual manufacturer
making anything for that vent-- how bout you making one and offer it?

I'm not sure if you need a screen since the flap is closed if the fan is off and when it is open, the fan is pushing out. It would take a strong bug
to overcome that airflow coming out.

Be sure the duct tape hinge on that flap is up for the job. I find most of
the flappers are missingby this time and yea-- factory hinge was a piece of
duct tape....

Thanks for the thoughts, suggestions, and replies. My coach has a good quality paint job and covers the exterior vent, so I don't want to pull and
replace with a new one. Evidently the P.O. "lost" the original flap. I will see if I want to make a replacement flap, or try making a screen
instead. Rain storms and car washes might help me decide.

We had the original vent in our 75 Glenbrook. I blocked it off and glassed over it. The only time we may have used it is when we were boiling some
corn on the cob that we picked up at a farmers market. It was a beautiful fall day so we just opened a couple of windows. The two reasons for
blocking it off were critters and an attempt to get the coach as tight as possible to conserve heat. I am debating what to do with our current
Edgemonte. The PO installed a good vent before a nice paint job. I may leave the vent and seal it off on the inside. This will give me options in
the future. If you eliminate the fans on the inside, you also gain some cupboard space. Every little bit helps. I did not have a co tester in the
previous coach. We will have one in this one. We didn't do that much serious cooking. Now we eat mostly raw vegies. Don't have to worry about
grease when you are a vegan.
