Does the term I keep hearing "double wrap" mean what it sounds like that you run the band around the boot twice before using the tool to tighten. Thanks

Yes, when using the 1/4 " wide "Band It" clamps on the axle itself. Not the
large end of the outboard CV.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your answer, Jim...

I've used double-wrap bands on the small AND the large end of the CV
boot. Did this a couple months ago.
No trouble getting both from NAPA.

so is the answer yes on the small end and no on the large?

My answer is Yes on both ends. But I'm a relative newby with only 9
years on GMCs. . :^)

From my experience I don't think the small end actually needs a double
wrap. Fact is, I'm running a quality zip-tie on there right now - just
to see what it does.

The big end definitely needs a double wrap. And you need a quality
tightening tool (NAPA again) and the info I found says torque them to 65
in/lbs.

I didn't have the good tool or the torque info the first time I did
this. Mine boots seeped grease and one finally popped off after 4
years. Always better the second time around...

Kelvin, from what I understood from the instructions that I have with my
NAPA Band IT tool, It recommended that the smaller surfaces like the axle
itself be double wrapped for best results. I don't think that they
prohibited double wrapping the large ends, perhaps the amount of material
required for the large ones enters into it. The short ones have to be quite
long to wrap the axle and then thread through the tool so that they can be
properly tensioned and crimped, and maybe they can eliminate some lengths by
not having short ones. I do know that some people here on the Forum have
left their small ends totally unbanded. I personally do not think that is a
good idea, particularly in Oregon. Reason being that road grit, mixed with
water spray from the tires isn't too much different than valve lapping
compound, and if a wet slurry can find it's way into the boot, it will make
short work of the CV joint.

everywhere you put them. It prevents pinching the boot material, and provides
a more even distribution of clamping force.

There has been some discussion of not putting clamps at all on the SMALL
end. I put clamps on mine. You MUST put a clamp on the large end. That's not
what Jim meant--he was reading instructions saying that double-wrapping is
particularly useful for small diameters. But my recommendation is to
double-wrap everything.

YES the large outboard end! That's where it's really important. The double
wrap, with the SS on SS bearing surface, allows the circumferential stress
to be translated into radial force without bunching up the rubber. At the
axle (small end) a single wrap would certainly suffice -- as does no clamp
at all.

I don't think so. I have always use a double wrap on the large end.

The large ends are so hard to hold, some used to: clean the rim with
solvent, and dimple the lip with a center punch to help the boot hold.

the double wrap was a step forward
