Hi,

wondering if you guys have suggestions on an air cleaner setup for a rochester tbi?  I went down the path of the snorkel intake with the remote air filter but it doesnt seem to be working well.  anybody have any recommendations?

thanks!

What year coach?

I have the sprecte intake with a hose and open air filter.    The open air intake is not ideal, but in my 75 I have a few things in the way to do something different.

Keith V found a gm duramax intake he made work.   It looks ideal and uses a paper gm air filter.
Photos on photosite:

Bob D also has a nice intake system on his 78 that I think uses a gm van.

I dont think much works as far as a non-snorkle system.    Just not enough clearance above, or the distributor gets in the way.

my coach is a 73.

what do you mean by 'open air filter', you mean 'no air filter'?

I had ~4 feet of 4 inch dryer vent hose to a spectre filter and I think I am suffocating the engine.  while troubleshooting an issue I pulled off the air scoop and then engine started running fine.  that put me in the market to change my setup..

Thanks!

So you have some objects like air tank and maybe batteries in the driver front that makes some options trickier.

I am curious on how your snorkle is installed onto the tbi.   Do you have enough spacer?

A 4” hose should be good.   The dryer one’s i found get crushed or dont hold shape over time.

What I mean by open air filter is it is not in any kind of air. Box.   Just wide open to the elements.

It is loud.  You can hear the air getting sucked in.   Located right under my feet.

Open means a cone filter thats not in a housing. They don't filter as well as a paper filter and are really only recommended for racing.
I doubt the 4' of 4" tubing is the restriction, look at the stock system, it has a really small snorkle.
What hat are you running? I'm not a fan of the jeep hat, it's really small

My filter, that Jon linked to, uses a big paper filter it's better and quieter than the stock filter. It also uses 4' of 4" tubing

I'm using the Jeep snorkel. I found that I had to add a tall spacer to allow the air to make the 90 degree turn down into the throttle body.  Its the green plastic tube in the photo

I was using aluminum dryer hose, but it was fragile.  I have since switched to black PVC pipe.

PVC pipe should flow well!
But look at that snorkle, or hat as compared to the aluminum one i used. It's very small IMHO

I have lots of years of experience with remote air cleaners. Used most  any combination you can think of. Stock ones, engineered by really good factories are flow tested and usually do NOT have a 90° bend directly over the top of the carb or efi throttle body. There needs to be a riser under the jeep snorkle or there will be issues with air flow. I use 4" stainless steel exhaust tubing  for longer straight runs. K & N makes really good air filters in various styles to accomodate the different configurations on various coaches. I have pictures if you need them.

darn. that is very similar to my setup - which seems to be a problem.

I have the spectre snorkel

I put an inch spacer under the snorkel to fit over the injectors. I was also using the aluminum dryer hose and switch off for the same reason.  to fragile.

as some on this thread my remember, I was dealing with an issue where the engine would suddenly die, for no apparent reason.  I am still chasing that gremlin..

Not sure how much 1/2” makes.   But onmy blog I stayed I  installed 1.5” spacers.    I know I got the top of that snorkle intake right up next
To the floor to get as much space/height as I could get out of it.

I had to cut away the engine cover and make a little riser in it to get mine to clear.  hard to go much higher without making it obvious from inside the cab.  not the worst scenario, but not the best either.
