Hey, can some one provide solution of the below qns please. I took this qns from gmatclub.

4. A draining pipe can empty a pool in 4 hours. On a rainy day, when the pool is full, the draining pipe is opened and the pool is emptied in 6 hours. If rain inflow into the pool is 3 liters per hour, what is the capacity of the pool?
A. 9 liters
B. 18 liters
C. 27 liters
D. 36 liters
E. 45 liters

Thank you

Volume = Rate x Time
Where Time is in hours and Rate = net drain rate in L/hr = rate out - rate in
Let r = drain rate without rain

A draining pipe can empty a pool in 4 hours --> V = r * 4
The raining day equation is V = (rate out - rate in) x time = (r - 3) * 6

Setting the 2 equations equal to each other, we have 4r = 6 * (r - 3).  Solving for r, we have r = 9.

Going back to the 1st equation: V = r * 4 = 9 * 4 = 36.  Thus, the answer is D.

Thanks Jammie ...very nice and smooth explanation

I have a one more qns guys. Please try it out.

Does line S intersect line segment QR?

Q(1,3) and R(2,2)

(1) The equation of line S is y = -x + 4.

(2) The slope of line S is -1.

I think the OA is A.

Here are my thoughts on it.

I plotted the graph roughly, and found out that the equation of QR .i.e. y= -x+4. (same as S in Statement 1)

Statement 1: using this we can conclude that S and Line QR are identical lines or the same lines. Hence these two overlap or not. One way or the other this statement sufficies.

Statement 2: Knowing just the slope of S (i.e. -ve) does not help much in concluding. The Line S might intersect or might have parallel nature to QR.
