This week I've given my resume and a cover letter to a couple
different language schools around town, but I think the job market may
be kind of dry until a new term starts in January. I haven't yet
talked to the local university or any of the private primary and
secondary schools, but I'm guessing they'd be the same as far as when
they'll next be hiring. Also, I think I'd only teach young kids as a
sort of last resort, since I have no training or experience with that.
What I'm thinking at this point is that if jobs aren't available until
the new year and if I don't get any response to some flyers I made
about private lessons, I'll stay here through at least Day of the
Dead, and then possibly go home for a sort of extended Thanksgiving /
Christmas holiday. If I am able to do some private tutoring, I think
I'll stay until mid-December, and then fly to Tampa for my cousin's
wedding and onto Michigan from there.
The place I'd most like to work, called Fortaleza de la Mujer Maya
(where I've done some volunteer teaching), might be able to pay me
starting in January, or at least provide free housing. If I was able
to arrange enough private sessions to pay for food (pretty cheap if I
mostly eat at home or in a market stall, where you can get tacos for
about US$0.15), that would be the ideal situation. (Well, actually
earning a salary would be more ideal, but failing that I still think
I'd prefer working there for housing than working at a language
school.)
Right now I'm still staying at the hostel (that has the kittens), so I
haven't technically stopped "travelling" yet. That means it's okay
that I still haven't sent any postcards. (I bought them a week and a
half ago in Guatemala, and I bought stamps the day before yesterday,
so I am well on my way to actually writing them and dropping them in a
post box.)
Hope everyone's doing well.
