Secondly, it finally looks like I really will be working as an English
teacher here. I just talked with the director of the Oxford
Institute, and I'm going in tomorrow to observe the class that I might
start teaching as early as next Saturday. It's 5 hours every week for
$40 (pesos) per hour, and sometime in the next week or two I may also
be picking up another teacher's classes for 15 hours during the week
at $35 / hour. It's not a whole lot, especially by American
standards, but I can live comfortably here on under $700 a week and
will be making $725. (Granted, going out and drinking with people
from the hostel has prevented me from actually living that cheaply in
practice, but once I have a job and start renting a room on my own,
saving money will be much easier.)
I don't know right now how late into December these classes would go,
meaning I'm not sure whether I'll be able to go to my cousin Beth's
wedding on the 16th. The school strikes me as relatively flexible
about such things, but at the same time I kind of don't want to work
only a month before taking almost that long off to go home for the
wedding, Christmas, and New Year's. (I will, however, definitely be
able to go home for at least a little while for the latter two days,
since a country as generally religious as Mexico isn't going to have a
lot of demand for English lessons over the holiday season.)
I sent postcards to a few people a little while ago, which have
hopefully arrived by now. If not, blame the vagueries (which I never
spell correctly) of the Mexican postal service and be glad if they
ever arrive at all.
