I have a strange problem and I'm looking for a way to correct it.

If I sign into Gmail using Mozilla 1.7.1 (might be relevant, not
sure), and select a message, it opens as expected. However, the Gmail
interface loses focus, so if I hit 'y' to archive, I either get a
message 'No conversation selected' or Mozilla begins searching for the
letter 'y' in one of the links on the page. Clicking anywhere in the
window then allows the keyboard shortcut to work. However, then trying
to use keyboard shortcuts again fails.

Any idea where I can start debugging? I uninstalled Mozilla completed
(except for the profiles directory) and then reinstalled. It might be
some Chrome left over from a previous install, but I'm not sure where
to start debugging.

Unfortunately, that didn't help. I'll keep looking.

How about starting Mozilla with a totally fresh profile, just in case
there's something causing the problem with your current profile (I had
this kind of problem with Moz Firefox and reverting to a fresh profile
it). Just a thought.

i was experiencing this problem before. was using Firefox 0.9. But now
i just realized it never happens to me anymore. Try a really clean
reinstall (delete everything that moz left) if you think that the
problem is with your moz installation. I would suggest a trip down to
the about:config page.

I'll give that a try tomorrow, after some sleep.

about:config didn't show me anything that I would think would have
that problem, so I think I will try a new profile, and then wipe Moz
clean, and start fresh if that doesn't work.

I renamed the user.js and prefs.js for my profile and restarted
Mozilla. Now the problem is solved, so I will investigate what caused
the problem, and report back. This information might be useful to
future readers of the list.

Found it. Strange one, and I'm not sure why, but the problem was that
I had disabled Javascript from "Raise or Lower Windows" in
Edit/Preferences/Advanced/Scripts & Plugins.

The key in the prefs.js is dom.disable_window_flip being set to true.

good for you, fuzzy, but weird, i have the same setting turned on here
in my firefox but i see no problem. It makes sense do if that (allow
javascript to raise or lower windows) really what's causing the
problem..

Yes, I thought it strange too. However, I added the entries to my
prefs.js 1 at a time, shutting down Mozilla completely in-between, and
this problem was only reproducible with the option to raise/lower
windows enabled. What version of Firefox do you have? I might open a
Bugzilla with Mozilla about this after I read the code in Firefox and
the corresponding code in Mozilla.
