I have an old gmail account that I cannot get into, can't remember password..  I would like to pop it to my current gmail so I can make it the default, it has a nicer id!
Any advice would be appreciated please... then I can give up my msn email and be 100% Google (Chromebook).

Isn't there an "I forgot my password" link somewhere?  Those are usually helpful for regaining access to a forgotten password account.

You can always try using the "Account Recovery Form" - which starts here .....  https://www.google.com/accounts/recovery/

The Help pages on the matter here   http://support.google.com/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=117219  may also hopefully help you understand the process.

One of my (ex-) TC colleagues wrote a 'knol' about how to recover a lost or compromised account -

Try the "Can't access your account?" link where you would normally
login to Gmail. I would start with that. Or browse around in the Help area.

You can't do anything with your old account without access to it
(without the password). That includes moving messages from the old
one to the new one.

Thanks for the help guys.  I have tried these and that has found the apparent reason I can't get in to that old account.  It seems it no longer exists, except as a sign in id for YouTube. Strange!

Hmm. Did you delete the account? It's odd that the Google account
still exists (since you can use it to access YouTube, and I'm told
they have common accounts) but there is no Gmail to go along with it.
Is the account still there but empty now?

I just don't know, except I cannot sign in to that account. It just shows up at the top of YouTube when I go there.

Bryan,
Accounts don't normally "just die" - they may become dormant, but are very infrequently 'killed off'; so I suggest you try and go through that ARF (again) as that will give you the best chance of recovering the password (which is the ONLY way you'll get back into that particular account). I know someone who went through more than 20 attempts before he remembered something, and that was just enough for the system to allow him to recover.

The address won't be re-issued to anyone else, and you may well have to have several attempts with the Account Recovery Form: each time you might remember just a little something different which may be enough to trigger the release (by way of sending the info to that address you specified when you opened that account - you did add that info in, didn't you?). That's why it is so important to maintain either the e-mail address specified and/or the mobile number you add to the SMS option.
